मानव आर्वीला घेऊन गेला तसं आरोहीला एकदम वेगळंच जाणवू लागलं, असं वाटत होतं जणू तिच्या शरीराचा एक भाग कुणीतरी तिच्यापासून विलग करतोय. मानवच्या कपाळावर आठ्या तश्याच होत्या, त्याने आरोहीच्या आई बाबांकडे एकदा पाहिलं आणि पंधरा वर्षांपूर्वी केलेला अपमान त्याला आठवला. यावेळी आरोहिचे आई वडील मात्र जरा ओशाळले होते. काळ खूप विचित्र असतो, कुठली गोष्ट कधी बदलेल काही सांगता येत नाही.

“जेव्हा एखाद्या गुपिताचे साक्षीदार केवळ आणि केवळ आपण असतो, तेव्हा ते दडपण आभाळाएव्हढं असतं..”
एवढं बोलून प्रमिला निघून जाते. खुशीला एवढं मात्र कळतं की त्या फोटोतल्या मुलीचा आणि प्रमिलाचा काहितरी खोलवर संबंध आहे.

“म्हणालीस म्हणजे? आहेच ते माझे आई बाबा..आता माझ्या अपघातानंतर मी मागचं सगळं विसरले, मान्य आहे की सुरवातीला मला सगळेच अनोळखी होते, पण एकेकाशी हळूहळू नव्याने ओळख केली.. स्मृती गेली असली तरी नाती मात्र बदलत नाही ना..”
“हम्म…बरं झालं तुझी स्मृती जाण्याआधी मी तुझ्या आयुष्यात नव्हतो, नाहीतर मलाही विसरली असतीस..आणि केलं असतं लग्न दुसऱ्या सोबत..”
“सांगता येत नाही, केलं असतं बहुतेक..”
असं म्हणत आरोही हसायला लागते. नकुल तिच्या हसण्यात सामील होतो पण आतून त्याला एक वेगळं सुख भासत असतं, आरोही आत्ता कुठे माणसात आली होती, अपघातांनंतर तिचा पुनर्जन्मच झाला होता.

“मग अश्या अपघात झालेल्या, स्मृती गेलेल्या आणि…कधीही आई न होऊ शकणाऱ्या मुलीशी कुणी केलं असतं लग्न?”
वडील आजही मुलीच्या बाजूने खंबीर होते, पण आई मात्र जातपात, रीती, परंपरा, सामाजिक स्थान यालाच कवटाळून होती. आतुन तिला पश्चाताप होताच, की मानवसोबत लग्न लावून देणं योग्य होतं, पण वास्तवाचं सुखद चित्रण बळेच डोळ्यासमोर उभं करायचं आणि कृत्रिम समाधानी व्हायचं हेच आरोहीची आई करत होती. मानवच्या वेळेस वडिलांचं काहीएक चाललं नव्हतं, त्यावेळी मुलीचा निर्णय आईच चांगला घेऊ शकेल म्हणून वडील गप होते, पण आज ते विचार करत होते..”मी मुलीच्या बाजूने असतो तर??”

प्रमिलाने सागरकडे रागीट कटाक्ष टाकला तसा तो एकदम गप झाला..
“मोठं पोट घेऊन म्हणजे?”
खुशीने विचारलं..
“हे बघ खुशी…आरोही, मी आणि सागर..तरुण असतांना एकत्र वाढलो आहोत. आरोहीच्या आयुष्यात अश्या काही घटना घडल्या आहेत की ज्या फक्त मी आणि सागरने पाहिल्या आहेत..त्यांची वाच्यता कुठेही झाली तरी मोठा अनर्थ होईल, त्यामुळे यापुढे या विषयावर मौन बाळग..”
