“चालेल..जवळच जाऊया कुठेतरी..”
मानवची बायको आर्वीला बोलवायला जाते. आर्वी खोलीतून प्रतिसाद देत नसते.
“ही मुलगी ना, नक्की कानात हेडफोन लावून बसली असणार. फोन केल्याशिवाय उघडणार नाही..”
आई फोन करून आर्वीला बाहेर काढते..
“आर्वी बाळा, आपल्याला बाहेर जायचं आहे. फिरायला”
“कुठे?”
“जाऊ असंच इथेच कुठेतरी. ”
“नको गं आई, मला नाही आवडत बाहेर”
“आमच्यासोबत आवडत नाही सांग ना..हेच जर तुझ्या मित्र मैत्रिणींनी म्हटलं असतं तर स्वारी केव्हाच तयार असती..”
“बरं बाई, चल. तुझं लेक्चर ऐकण्यापेक्षा बरं..”
दोघींचं बोलणं मानव ऐकतो आणि म्हणतो..
“तयारी करा, मी ड्रायव्हरला सांगतो. ”
सर्वजण तयारी करून जवळच्याच एका डोंगराकडे जातात..

नकुल घरी येतो, आपण मानवच्या कंपनीत गेलो होतो हे आरोहीला सांगतो.
“कोण मानव?”
“अगं.. तो नाही का, आपल्याला सागरच्या लग्नात भेटला होता..नंतर त्या अनाथाश्रमात…”
“अच्छा..त्याची ती लहानशी गोड मुलगी होती ती का..”
“हो..”
“फार गोड मुलगी होती, आता मोठी झाली असेल बरीच..”
“होय तर..कॉलेजला जायला लागली..”
“नकुल, आयुष्यात इतकी माणसं येतात पण काहीजण फार लक्षात राहतात..का असावं असं?”
“कदाचित काहीतरी नातं असावं अश्या माणसात, म्हणून देवच त्यांची पुनर्भेट घडवून आणत असावा..”
मानव आणि आरोही आता चाळिशीकडे झुकले होते. एकमेकांच्या सहवासात संसार करत होते. भौतिक गरजा पूर्ण व्हायच्या पण त्यांच्या मानसिक गरजा या अपूर्णच राहिल्या. एकाकीपण त्यांना खायला उठे. कितीही म्हटलं तर एकमेकांची साथ देऊन देऊन किती देणार? दोघेही दानधर्म करत, देश फिरून येत..पण या सर्व पळवाटा होत्या. आपल्याच जीवनापासून त्यांना लांब जायचं होतं. जी लोकं सांसारिक आयुष्य जगत होती त्यांच्यापेक्षा कितीतरी वेगळं असं आयुष्य त्यांनी स्वीकारलं होतं. केवळ जगण्याचा आधार म्हणून. मरता येत नाही म्हणून जगत होती, आणि जगणं सुसह्य व्हावं म्हणून एकत्र रहात होती.
दुपारी 4-5 च्या दरम्यान नकुल आणि आरोही दोघेही tv बघत बसले होते. बाहेर पावसाचं वातावरण झालं, लाईटही गेली. त्यांचा एकाकी आयुष्यात अजून एकाकीपण. घरात थांबणं त्यांना असह्य झालं, नकुल म्हणाला..
“चल आज बाहेर जाऊया का फिरायला?”
“थांबा चहा पिऊन जाऊया..”
“नको अगं, बाहेर किती छान वातावरण आहे. बाहेरच कुठेतरी गरमागरम चहा घेऊया..आणि वेळ झाला तर बाहेरच जाऊया..”
“चला. तू म्हणतो तसं..”
आरोही आणि नकुल तयारी करून जवळच्याच एका हॉटेलमध्ये गेले. तिथे चहा घेतला. तरी आत्ताशी सहा वाजले होते. आता पुढे इतका वेळ काय करायचं? हा प्रश्न सतावू लागला. तिथल्या हॉटेलच्या मालकाने त्यांना सांगितलं..
“साहेब, इथून पुढे एक मस्त जागा आहे..छानसा डोंगर आहे..माझं दुसरं हॉटेल आहे तिथे..एकदा जाऊन बघून या..”
“एकदा कशाला, आत्ताच जाऊन येतो की..असंही वेळच वेळ असतो आम्हाला..संसाराचा व्याप नाही आम्हाला..”
नकुल विनोदात म्हणाला पण आरोहीला ते लागलं. नकुलला आपण उगाच बोललो असं झालं. पण आता त्या ठिकाणी जाऊन आरोहीचा राग कमी करावा असं तो ठरवतो. दोघेही इच्छित स्थळी पोहोचतात. रस्त्याच्या एका बाजूला गाडी उभी केलेली असते, रस्ता ओलांडून त्या डोंगराकडे जायचं असतं. भरधाव गाड्या सुरू असतात. नकुल आरोहीचा हात गच्च पकडतो अन रस्ता ओलांडतो. आरोही एकदम दचकून बघते..
“काय गं काय झालं?”
“अं? काही नाही..”
“काही नाही काय, किती घाबरलीये तू..”
“हे..हे या आधीही झालं आहे एकदा..”
“एकदा नाही, अनेकदा झालंय, रस्ता ओलांडतांना तुझा हात कधी मोकळा सोडलाय का मी??”
“हो..पण..”
“चल आपण पुढे जाऊया..”
नकुलला लक्षात येतं की आरोहीला जुन्या स्मृती परत येताय, पण त्या स्मृती कदाचित जीवघेण्या ठरू शकतील म्हणून शक्य तितकं तो विषय बदलायचा प्रयत्न करत होता..दोघेही वाट काढत वरच्या मोकळ्या जागी जातात.

“गंगाराम? कुठे आणलस?”
ड्रायव्हर ला बऱ्यापैकी गोष्टी माहीत होत्या, त्याला खरं तर लक्षात नाही आलं की इथेच आरोही आणि मानव सर एकट्यात भेटलेले..पण त्याला वेळेवर ते क्लिक झालं नाही आणि त्याच्या स्वभावाप्रमाणे चांगल्या पिकनिक स्पॉटवर त्याने गाडी घेतली..
“गंगारामला काय बोलतोय, छान जागा आहे की ही..”

सर्वजण उतरतात. मानवला त्या जागेवरच्या जुन्या आठवणी त्रास देतात. आरोहीची आठवण सतावू लागते. असं वाटायचं ती आसपास आहे, झाडांच्या मागे लपलेली, लपूनछपून बघणारी.
इकडे नकुल आणि आरोही डोंगरावर फिरत असतात. नकुल त्या मोकळ्या हवेचा आनंद घेत असतो तर आरोही मात्र खूप मोठ्या गोंधळात सापडली होती. मन आणि बुद्धी याचं ताळतंत्र बसत नव्हतं. वर्तमान आणि भूतकाळ यांची सांगड घालणं अवघड होऊन बसलं होतं.
नकुलला तिचा गोंधळ समजत होता. जुन्या स्मृती कदाचित तिला आठवत असतील. पण त्यांनी जर मेंदूवर ताबा घेतला तर अवघड होईल. म्हणून नकुल तिला सतत बोलण्यात गुंतवून ठेवण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो.
“आरोही, असं समज आपण पहिल्यांदा भेटतोय..आणि एकमेकांना प्रपोज करायचं आहे..”
“काहीही काय..”
“अगं खरंच, थोडासा वेडेपणा केलेला चांगला असतो..उठ बरं, उभी रहा ..सांग मला…तुला कसा मुलगा हवाय..?”
“तुमच्यासारखा..”
“सॉरी..??”
“म्हणजे…एक छानसा व्हाईट शर्ट, ब्लॅक जीन्स मध्ये माझ्या घरी येऊन माझ्या आईशी छानपैकी बोलणारा, बोलण्याने समोरच्याचं मन जिंकणारा..कर्तृत्ववान.. देखणा. ”
” आरोही, असं एकट्या मुलाला बघून फ्लर्ट करताय तुम्ही..”
“काहीही समजा…होय..मला तुम्हीच हवे आहात.. कायमचे..”

आरोहीच्या या वाक्याने नकुल मागे सरकतो..आरोही मात्र त्याच क्षणात अजूनही असते. पण जेव्हा भानावर येते तेव्हा तिचे डोळे पांढरे पडलेले असतात, अंगात त्राण उरलेला नसतो, ती खाली कोसळते..
“Help… help.. कुणी आहे का?”
सुनसान ठिकाणी एकटा सापडलेला नकुल मदतीची याचना करू लागतो.
