“ऐकावं लागेल. आरोही आणि मानव टूर ला गेले म्हणून तू आकांडतांडव केलेलं. आरोही घरी येताच तिला तू कानशिलात लगावली आणि तिला घरी नजरकैदेत ठेवलं. तिला नोकरीवर पाठवलं नाही, तिचा फोन जप्त केलास”
“तेव्हा ती गरज होती, ती मानवसोबत उद्या पळून गेली असती तर?”
“मानव सोबत? अगं तो काय झोपडपट्टीत राहणारा मुलगा होता का? एका मोठ्या कंपनीचा मालक होता तो, आजही आहे..करोडोंचा व्यवहार चालतो त्याचा”
“असुदेत..पण मला ते मान्य नव्हतं..”
“आरोही ऑफीसला येत नाही म्हणून मानव स्वतः घरी चौकशी साठी आला तेव्हा त्याचा तू जो काही अपमान केलेला ना, तो मी कधीच विसरू शकत नाही. इतका मोठा माणूस पण अगदी भिकाऱ्यासारखी वागणूक दिली तू, त्याला नको नको ते बोललीस..पण तो एका शब्दाने उलट बोलला नाही..जाताना डोळ्यात पाणी आणून निघून गेला तो..”
“तो परत परत येईल याची मला खात्री होती, म्हणूनच मी आरोहीला गावी तिच्या मामा कडे पाठवलं..त्याला असंही मुलबाळ नव्हतं, ते गाव दूर..त्यामुळे मानव तिथे पोहोचणार नव्हता..”
“तू फक्त तेवढ्यावर थांबली नाहीस, मानवशी संपर्क करण्याचा प्रयत्न केलास तर मी गळफास घेऊन टाकेन अशी धमकी तिला दिली.. कुणी इतकं वाईट वागतं का? वर्षभर ती तिथे राहिली..तिच्या रागापायी तिला भेटायला गेली नाहीस, दीड वर्षानंतर तिला घ्यायला गेलो आणि…त्या अपघातात तुझे भाऊ आणि वहिनी तर गेलेच, पण.. आरोहीची स्मृती..”
हे ऐकताच आईला अश्रू अनावर होतात, तोंड दाबत ती खोलीत निघून जाते आणि अश्रूंना वाट मोकळी करून देते.

प्रमिला तिच्या गावी भेट देऊन तिच्या घरी जाते. तिथे काही मंडळी प्रमिलाला भेटायला आलेली असतात.
“नमस्कार, मी सुमित.. आधाराश्रमातून आलेलो आहे, तुमच्या काही सह्या घ्यायच्या बाकी आहेत..”
नवऱ्यासमोर हे सगळं होत असल्याने प्रमिला जरा घाबरते..त्याला यातील काहीच प्रकार माहीत नसतो.
“कसल्या सह्या..”
“2000 साली तुम्ही एका बालकाला अनाथाश्रमात आणून सोडलं होतं. त्यावेळी जे कर्मचारी होते ते आता तिथे काम करत नाहीत.त्यांनी काही कागदपत्रांची पूर्तता केली नव्हती. त्यामुळे रेकॉर्ड तपासून आम्ही इथे आलो आहोत.”
प्रमिलाच्या नवऱ्याला एकदम धक्का बसतो, प्रमिलाने असं काही केलं होतं याबद्दल तिने काहीच सांगितलं नव्हतं, काय प्रकार असेल हा?
“किती वर्षे झाली त्या गोष्टीला, आता कसल्या सह्या हव्यात?”
“मॅडम सरकारी नियमानुसार आम्हाला हे करावं लागतं.. ही इथे सही करा..”
प्रमिला जरा काहीश्या शंकेनेच सही करते, सुमित तिला विचारू लागतो.
“मॅडम त्या बाळाला तिथे सोडल्यानंतर त्याच्या चौकशीसाठी तुम्ही परत गेला होता का?”
“नाही..मी परत तिथे गेले नव्हते..”
“नक्की? नाही म्हणजे, आम्हाला माहिती ठेवावी लागते..”
“मी खरं सांगतेय..”
“ठीक आहे, येतो..”
सुमित सगळी माहिती घेऊन निघतो, त्याच्या गाडीत जाऊन बसतो. गाडीची काच लावून लगेच
नकुलला फोन करतो,
“नकुल सर, तुम्ही सांगितल्याप्रमाणे त्या बाळाला तिथे कुणी सोडलं इथपर्यंत मी पोचलो, पण त्या सांगताय की बाळाला तिथे सोडल्यानंतर त्या पुन्हा तिथे गेल्या नाहीत. त्या बाळाला कुणी दत्तक घेतलं किंवा ते आता कुठे गेलं याची माहिती आधारश्रम देणार नाही..”
“ठीक आहे..बोलतो मी नंतर..”
आरोही समोर असल्याने नकुलने संभाषण थोडक्यात आवरतं घेतलं. बिचाऱ्या आरोहीला तर कल्पनाही नव्हती की नकुल कुठल्या गोष्टीसाठी शोध घेतोय ते. नकुलने सर्वतोपरी प्रयत्न केले, अपघाता नंतर त्या बाळाला कुणी कुठे नेलं याची माहिती काढण्यासाठी, ते बाळ अनाथाश्रमात गेलं इथवर तो पोहोचला होता पण पुढे त्याचं काय झालं याची काहीही माहिती मिळायला मार्ग नव्हता.
“आहे का नकुल साहेब घरी??”
सागर, प्रमिलाचा भाऊ आणि त्याची बायको खुशी दारातून आवाज देतात.
“अरे?? खुशी तू? या या या..एकदम धक्काच दिलास तू येउन..”
“हो, इथूनच जात होतो, म्हटलं बघूया आपल्या मित्राचा संसार कसा चाललाय ते..”
“ए पण हे नातं दोन्हीकडून आहे बरं का..जसा नकुल तुझा मित्र तशी आरोही माझ्या बहिणीची, प्रमिलाची मैत्रीण..”
“कोण आलंय?”
आरोही बाहेर येते, ती अपेक्षेप्रमाणे कुणालाही ओळखत नाही. सागर तिच्याकडे बघतो आणि त्याच्या डोळ्यात पाणी येतं. प्रमिला सोबत आरोही सतत असायची, सागर साठी प्रमिला आणि आरोही दोघीही बहिणीप्रमाणेच. झालेल्या सर्व गोष्टींना सागर साक्षीदार होता पण प्रमिलाला दिलेल्या वचनामुळे आजतागायत तो मौन बाळगून होता.
“आरोही, अगं ही खुशी, माझी कॉलेज मैत्रीण.. आणि हा सागर, यांच्याच लग्नाला आपण गेलेलो..”
“अच्छा हो हो..सागर म्हणजे माझ्या माहेरी याची ओळख काहीतरी सांगितलेली पण आता आठवत नाही..सॉरी तुम्हाला तर माहितीच आहे..”

“तो काहीही सांगत नाहीये..”
“एक माहिती मिळाली, त्याची बहीण, प्रमिलाने त्या बाळाला अनाथाश्रमात सोडलं होतं, पण पुढे ते कुठे गेलं समजत नाही..”
“तुझ्या लक्षात येतंय का? प्रमिलाने त्याला तिथे सोडलं, याचा अर्थ तिला त्या बाळाचा सगळा इतिहास माहीत असावा, जर ते बाळ असं रस्त्यावर सापडलं असतं तर त्यात लपवण्यासारखं काहीही नव्हतं, त्यांनी मौन का बाळगलं असतं?”
“आता तूच या गोष्टीची माहिती काढू शकतेस, तुला विनंती करतो, माहिती काढ..”
“पण तुला त्या बाळाबद्दल इतकं का प्रेम आहे??”
“आरोही ज्या अवस्थेत अपघातात मला दिसली, तिथे एक बाळही होतं.. ते कुणाचं हे समजलं नाही, पण आरोही आणि त्या बाळात मला माझी सोडून गेलेली गर्भवती बायको दिसली, ते मूल जर माझ्या आरोही चं असेल तर?”
