 “साहेब मकरंदवाडीत बसस्टॉप वर एक आक्षेपार्ह वस्तू आढळली आहे, लोकांना शंका आहे की त्यात एखादा बॉम्ब असेल, आपण लवकरात लवकर निघायला हवं..”

पोलीस स्टेशन मधील सर्व महत्वाचे कर्मचारी उठले, निवृत्तीवर येऊन ठेपलेल्या कुमुद मावशी, ज्या अनेक वर्षांपासून constable म्हणून काम करत होत्या त्याही उठल्या. तिथला पोलीस अधिकारी मिस्टर कदम यांना कुमुद मावशीचा भारी राग, वयोपरत्वे कुमुद मावशीकडून गतीने कामं होत नसत आणि कदम चिडून जात. आता इतक्या महत्वाच्या कामासाठी यांनी कशाला यावं असा त्यांना प्रश्न पडला..

सर्वजण पटकन बॉम्बशोधक पथकाला बोलावून घटनास्थळी गेले. बघ्यांची गर्दी जमलेली, पोलिसांनी सर्वांना लांब हाकललं..लोकांमध्ये उलटसुलट चर्चा होऊ लागल्या, एक तर नुकतचं दहशतवादी संघटनेकडून धमकीचा मेल सरकारला आला होता, त्यात हे असं..पण लोकांमध्ये दहशत कमी उत्सुकता जास्त..

बॉम्बशोधक पथकातील एकाने अंगरक्षक कोट चढवला, हेल्मेट घातलं आणि दबक्या पावलाने तो त्या पिशवीकडे चालू लागला. बस स्टेशनच्या मागच्या बाजूला एका बसच्या मागे ती पिशवी दिसत होती. बराच वेळ होऊनही ती तिथेच पडली होती. काही संशयित माणसं आसपास फिरकत होती..हे सगळं बस स्टेशनवर कामाला असलेल्या एका सफाई कर्मचाऱ्याच्या लक्षात आल्याने त्याने ही खबर पोलिसांना कळवली होती.

कदम आणि इतर पोलीस लांबून बघत होते, कुमुद मावशी बाजूला उभ्या होत्या..सर्वांचा जीव टांगणीला लागलेला..त्या पिशवीला हात लावला आणि स्फोट झाला तर? सर्वजण डोळ्यात प्राण आणून बघत होते. अखेर पथकातील त्या माणसाने पिशवी उघडली आणि त्यात जे पाहिलं ते बघून चटकन त्याने हेल्मेट बाजूला सारलं.. पोलिसांना तो आवाज देऊ लागला..

तिथे बॉम्ब नाहीये हे समजताच सर्वांचा जीव भांड्यात पडला..पण होतं काय त्यात? पोलिसांनी जवळ जाऊन पाहिलं तर नुकतंच जन्मलेलं एक बाळ त्यात होतं.. पिशवीचं तोंड एका बाजूने उघडं असल्याने नशिबाने ते गुदमरलं नव्हतं.. पोलिसांना ते विदारक चित्र बघून वाईट वाटलं, गुन्हेगारांवर सटासट हात उचलणारे पोलिसांचे भक्कम हात मात्र त्या नाजूकश्या जीवाला उचलायला कचरत होते..

सर्वांना बाजूला सारत कुमुद मावशी पुढे आल्या, त्यांनी पटकन बाळाला हातात घेतलं.. भुकेने व्याकुळ झालेल्या त्या जीवाला त्यांनी छातीशी धरलं..जवळच असलेल्या दुकानातून एक दुधाची बाटली मागवली..एका हॉटेलमधून गरम पाणी मागवत ती बाटली स्वच्छ केली.डेयरी मधून गाईचं दूध आणायला लावलं..दुधात अर्धं पाणी टाकलं आणि कोमट दूध बाळाच्या तोंडी लावलं..भुकेला तो जीव घाटघट दूध पिऊन गेला आणि लुकलुकत्या नजरेने आजूबाजूला बघत हसू लागला..वातावरण अगदी हळवं झालेलं..इवल्याश्या जीवाला कोण सांभाळणार हा प्रश्न होता..

कुमुद मावशी पुढे झाल्या आणि याच्या आई वडिलांचा शोध लागेपर्यंत मी सांभाळेन अशी ग्वाही दिली..त्याच दिवशी संध्याकाळी एक गरीब जोडपं पोलिसात तक्रार करायला आलं.

“साहेब..आमच्या बाळाला कुणीतरी उचलून नेलय.. एका मित्राशी माझं खूप भांडण झालेलं पैशावरून, त्याने माझ्या बाळाला उचलून न्यायची धमकी दिलेली..तो गायब आहे साहेब..माझ्या बाळाला शोधा साहेब..”

हे चालू असतानाच कुमुद मावशी बाळाला घेऊन बाहेर आल्या, आईने बाळाला बघत एकच हंबरडा फोडला..त्याला उराशी धरलं आणि कुमुद मावशीचे पाया पडू लागली.. बाळाला त्याचे आई वडील भेटले म्हणून सर्वांचा जीव भांड्यात पडला..बाळाला पळवून नेणाऱ्या त्या माणसाचाही शोध लागला..त्याला शिक्षा झाली..

हे सगळं झाल्यावर हवालदार मानके ऑफिसर कदमांना म्हणाले..

“साहेब..कुमुद बाईंना तुम्ही सोबत घ्यायला नाही म्हणत होते ना? पण काटेरी अश्या या वर्दीला मायेची कोमल किनारही लागतेच की…”

त्यानंतर कदमांनी चौकशीला जाताना कुमुद बाईंना कधीच विरोध केला नाही..
