बरीच वर्षे उलटली, राकेशचं निवृत्तीचं वय झालेलं. कंपनीतून रितसर कार्यक्रम होऊन तो रिटायर झाला आणि घरी मस्तपैकी आराम करू लागला. आता कुठे मेघनासोबत त्याला जास्त वेळ मिळत होता. घरात बसून त्याला कंटाळा यायचा. आजवर मेघना सोबत कामाव्यतिरिक्त काही गप्पा होत नव्हत्या पण आज त्याला तिच्याशी बोलू वाटे, पण ती कुठे रिटायर झालेली? तिची कामं दिवसभर सुरूच असायची.

राकेश तिच्याशी बोलू पाहायचा..

“चहा पाहीजे? नाश्ता हवाय का?” हेच ती विचारे.. नवऱ्याला काही दुसरं बोलायचं असेल हे तिच्या ध्यानीमनी सुदधा नसायचं..

ती उठायची, अंघोळ, देवपूजा होताच स्वयंपाकाला लागायची. मग कपडे, भांडी, झाडझुड, फरशी यातच दिवस निघून जाई. एकही दिवस कामात खंड नाही. 10 वाजले की तिच्या पोळ्या व्हायच्या, 1 वाजता ती दुपारची भांडी घासायची, राकेशला हे सगळं आता पाठ झालेलं.

आज मात्र त्याने ठरवलं, बायकोला घेऊन मुव्हीला जायचं. संध्याकाळी 8चा शो होता. दुपारी 1 वाजता तो तिच्याजवळ आला, सिंकपाशी ती उभी होती. 

“मेघना, आज संध्याकाळी आपल्याला मुव्हीला जायचं आहे..”

“काय?”

“मुव्हीला जाऊ संध्याकाळी..”

“हो जाऊया..”

राकेश तिथेच उभा होता..मेघनाने चार ग्लास घासून धुऊन जाळीत ठेवले. बाकीचेही भांडे धुवून ठेऊन दिले. सिंक मोकळा झाला. पण पुन्हा तिने ते चार ग्लास काढले अन घासू लागली. निघाले नसतील म्हणून परत घासत असेल, राकेशला वाटलं. पण पुन्हा तेच? झालेली सगळी भांडी तिने तीन वेळा पुन्हा पुन्हा धुवून ठेवली…आणि म्हणली, “तुम्हाला काही विचारायचं होतं का?”

“मी चुकीचा वागायचो तेव्हा मेघना मला टोकायची, बोलायची..पण मी तिला कायम धाकात ठेवण्याचा प्रयत्न केला, माझ्या आईने मी कितीही चुकलेलो असलो तरी माझीच बाजू घेतली. मी आजवर समजत होतो की माझी बायको चांगली आहे, मला टोकत नाही, जाब विचारत नाही. पण..कारण वेगळंच होतं. सततच्या धक्याने ती अगदी कोरडी झालेली, मी कायम माझ्या दुनियेत.. मी सकाळी पेपरमध्ये गुंग असायचो, ही डबाच बनवत असायची..मी ऑफिसला जायचो ही घरात कामच करत असायची, मी घरी यायचो ही पोळ्याच लाटत असायची, मी झोपायचो ही भांडीच घासत राहायची…माझा दिनक्रम बदलायचा पण हिचा कधीच बदललेला पाहिला नाही…आणि म्हणूनच, इतकी कोरडी झालीये ही? इतका यांत्रिकपणा आलाय तिच्यात? मला टोकत नव्हती, दारू प्यायला जायचो तरी बोलायची नाही ती चांगली होती म्हणून नाही, तर तिच्यातला भावच मी मारून टाकलेला. आणि इतकी वर्षे ही अशीच जगतेय? कसली तक्रार नाही, कसली चिडचिड नाही..मला वाटायचं चांगलंच आहे..ती बाहेरून कितीही चांगली दिसून आली तरी आतून पोखरली गेलीय हे कधी मी पाहिलं का नाही??” राकेशला आज समजलं मेघनाचं वागणं. थोडा उशीरच झालेला..

मेघना खोलीत आली, जेवण झालेलं असताना म्हणू लागली,
