किंमत थोरलीची

 रेवतीबाईंना मनासारखी सून मिळाली नाही म्हणून त्यांची सर्व आशा आता धाकट्या सुनेकडून होती. कार्तिकी एक डॉक्टर, प्रॅक्टिससाठी ती ओळखीतल्याच एका डॉक्टरकडे जात असे. सकाळी 9 ते संध्याकाळी 7 अशी तिची वेळ. सासरी कामाची बोंबच होती. सासूबाईं एकट्या कशाबशा घर आवरत. त्यांच्या एका लाडक्या भाचीचं फार्मसी मध्ये शिक्षण झालेलं, अर्थात तिने फक्त लग्नाच्या बायोडेटा वर उठून दिसावं म्हणूनच शिक्षण केलेलं. बाकी तिला करियर वगैरेत आवड नव्हती. आपली भाचीही औषधं देऊ शकते, म्हणजे तीही कार्तिकीच्या तोलामोलाचीच असं त्या अशिक्षित रेवतीबाईंना वाटे. दोन्ही पदव्यांमधील फरक त्यांनी जाणून घ्यायचा प्रयत्न केला नाही. त्यांना एवढंच दिसायचं, की आपली भाची एवढं शिकूनसुद्धा लग्न करून सासरी भडाभडा कामं करतेय, आणि कार्तिकी मात्र तिची डिग्री मिरवत अर्ध्याहून जास्त वेळ घराबाहेर असते. 

त्यामुळे धाकट्या मुलासाठी नोकरी न करणारी सून त्यांनी पसंत केली. गोड गोड बोलणारी, नाजूक, सुंदर अशी सून घरात आणली. रेवतीबाईंना आता दाखवून द्यायचं होतं की कार्तिकी कशी वाईट आहे ते. 

पहिल्याच दिवशी नवीन सून रेवा उशिरा उठली. लग्नाच्या धावपळीमुळे असेल कदाचित म्हणून रेवतीबाईंनी दुर्लक्ष केलं. दुसऱ्या दिवशी रेवा उठली खरी, रेवतीबाईंना वाटलं आता बघा धाकली सुनबाई कशी घडाघडा कामाला लागेल..एकीकडे कार्तिकी तिचा डबा बनवत होती आणि दुसरीकडे दूध गरम करत होती. 

“वहिनी, मलाही एक कप चहा..”

कार्तिकी हसली, जाउबाई कसली..लहान बहीण समजूनच कार्तिकी तिचे लाड करू लागली. तिने आयता चहा हातात दिला. रेवाने चहा घेतला आणि नवऱ्याला उठवायला गेली. नवऱ्यासोबत तासभर गप्पा केल्या आणि अंघोळ करून तयार झाली. कार्तिकी एव्हाना स्वयंपाक करून डबा बांधून निघूनही गेली. रेवती बाईंना आता हायसं वाटलं, इतरवेळी कार्तिकी गेली की उरलेली कामं त्यांना करावी लागत. पण आता रेवा सगळं सांभाळून घेईन म्हणून त्या मस्तपैकी tv लावून बसल्या. 

रेवाच्या गोड बोलण्याला रेवतीबाई भुलत होत्या, कार्तिकी जे काम अर्ध्या तासात करायची ते काम आता रेवा दोन तासात करू लागली. भाजी निवडताना मुद्दाम सासूबाईंशी गोड गोड बोलत त्यांच्या जवळ बसे, हळूच भाजी त्यांच्यापुढे सरकवत तिथून पळ काढे. कामाच्या वेळी..

“आई मी आलेच हं.. आईचा फोन आहे..”

“आई मला आज कसंतरीच होतंय.. एवढं आवरून घेता का..”

अशी कारणं सांगून ती पळ काढे. सासूबाईंकडून कामं व्हायची नाही पण तिच्या गोड बोलण्याला भुलून त्या निमूटपणे सगळं करत.

एके दिवशी अचानक रेवा आणि धाकला मुलगा, दोघे नवरा बायको समोर आले. त्यांना काहीतरी बोलायचं होतं.. रेवा ने कोपराने नवऱ्याला धक्का दिला तसा तो बोलू लागला..

“आई, आम्ही दुसऱ्या फ्लॅट मध्ये शिफ्ट व्हायचा विचार करतोय..”

“काय??” रेवतीबाईंना धक्काच बसला..

“आहो आई, त्यात काय इतकं? लांब राहून प्रेम वाढतं असं म्हणतात..तुम्ही काळजी करू नका, दर सहा महिन्यातून एकदा चक्कर मारत जाईन मी..”

रेवतीबाईंचे डोळे खाडकन उघडले गेले. रेवाच्या गोड बोलण्याला भुलून त्यांनी तिला नायिका आणि थोरल्या सुनेला खलनायिका बनवून टाकलेलं. पण आज मात्र त्यांना कार्तिकीची आठवण झाली. कार्तिकी भलेही मितभाषी असेल, पण घरातल्या कामांना कधीही कमीपणा दाखवला नाही की कधी टाळाटाळ केली नाही. कायम कुटुंब एकत्र बांधून ठेवलं. ही अशी वागत असतानाही तिची तक्रार न करता तिच्यासाठीही दोन पोळ्या जास्त करत गेली..आणि आपण? आपण मात्र थोरल्या सुनेलाच काहीबाही बोलत होतो..

धाकल्या सुनेने येऊन एक काम मात्र चांगलं केलं, आपल्या वागण्याने मोठ्या सुनेची किंमत मात्र सासूला समजावून दिली..
