नवीन कुणी दिसलं की कुतुहुलापोटी बघत असलेल्या नजरांपैकी या नजरा नव्हत्या,

काहीश्या वेगळ्याच होत्या,

आईला संशय येऊ लागला,

मुलीला काही व्यंग तर नाही ना? की मुलीचं बाहेर काही…

विचार करत करत ते आत गेले,

घरात जागाही नव्हती बसायला,

अर्धी जागा पलंगाने व्यापलेली,

तोही पूर्ण समानाने भरलेला..

एकावर एक वस्तू,

मुलीची आई पटकन बाहेर आली,

जराशी जागा केली आणि त्यांना बसवलं..

रेखा, चहा घेऊन बाहेर आली..

मान खाली घातलेली,

दिसायला बरी होती,

सगळं चांगलं वाटलं,

राकेशने ठरवलं,

होकार द्यायचा…

तेवढ्यात मुलीचे वडील घरात आले,

झोकांड्या देत,

आत काय चाललंय हे बघताच काहीसे वरमले,

चालता चालता पडले आणि कसेबसे उठून एका कोपऱ्यात बसले,

राकेश आणि त्याच्या आईला याचं काही फारसं वाटलं नाही,

त्याचे वडीलही तसेच होते,

किंबहुना त्यांच्या नातेवाईकात बहुतेक सगळे पुरुष असेच..

रेखाने वडिलांना पाहिलं,

तिचा स्वतःवर ताबा राहिला नाही,

“लेकीचा संसारही होऊ देणार नाही हा माणूस, अरे जरा तरी लाज आहे का? आज काय आहे हे सांगितलेलं ना तुम्हाला?”

“ए गप बस…” वडील ओरडले,

रेखाने डोळे लालबुंद झाले, हातातल्या वस्तू खाली ठेवल्या..

हातात जे दिसेल ते दाराच्या बाहेर फेकू लागली,

शिव्यांची लाखोली वाहत होती तोंडातून..

एक काठी हातात घेतली अन जमिनीवर जोरजोरात आपटू लागली..

राकेश आणि त्याच्या आईला हे सगळं विचित्र वाटू लागलं आणि ते तडक बाहेर चालायला लागले,

गल्लीतले लोकं पाहू लागले,

एक म्हातारी आजी त्यांच्यापुढे आली..

“तुम्ही या रेखाला पाहायला आले होते ना?”

“हो..”

“फार विचित्र मुलगी आहे, तुम्ही फसायला नको म्हणून सांगते..तिच्या डोक्यात नुसता राग भरलाय..संताप झाला की हातात दिसेल ते मारून फेकते, आदळआपट करते, स्वतःवर ताबा राहत नाही तिचा..एकदा तोंडाचा पट्टा सुरू झाला की आई कोण अन बाप कोण..कसलंच भान राहत नाही..”

ती बाई म्हणाली तसं आईने हात जोडले,

“बरं झालं बाई तुम्ही सांगितलं..नाहीतर फसलो असतो..”

गल्लीतले लोकं त्यांच्याकडे असं का पाहत होते ते आत्ता कळलं त्यांना..

राकेशच्या मनात चलबिचल सुरू होती,

अजून मुलींसाठी किती गल्ल्या झिजवणार? आपल्यामुळे आईला किती त्रास होतोय? राकेशने मनाशी काहीतरी विचार केला आणि आईला सांगितलं,

“आई मी या मुलीशी लग्न करणार..”

“वेडा झालास का? अरे आत्ता काय पाहिलं आणि ऐकलं आपण?”

“मला नाही वाटत मला अजून कुणी मुलगी होकार देईल म्हणून..”

आईला पटलं नव्हतं, पण तिलाही मोकळं व्हायचं होतं..

“बघ आता तुझ्या जबाबदारीवर..”

राकेशने तिला होकार कळवला,

जेमतेम लोकांत लग्न झालं..

रेखा आपलं बिऱ्हाड उचलून राकेशच्या घरी आली..

घर पाहून तिला काय वाटेल याची त्याला काळजी वाटली,

पण दारुड्या बाप आणि आरडाओरडा यातून झालेल्या सुटकेतून तिला ती खोली महालप्रमाणे वाटत होती, तिथली शांतता तिला आवडत होती..

दोघेही संसार करू लागले,

राकेश निर्व्यसनी होता,

त्यामुळे अंगातली फाटकी साडी अन खायला जेमतेम याचं तिला कधी दुःखं वाटलं नाही..

वर्ष झालं,

राकेशच्या आईला काळजी वाटत होती लेकराची,

कोपऱ्यावरच्या std तुन कधीतरी बोलणं होई,

जास्त बिल नको म्हणून लवकर आटोपयची दोघे,

आई त्याच्या बोलण्याच्या स्वरातून सगळं ओळखून घेई..

वर्ष झालं, आईने ठरवलं, लेकराला भेटायचं..

आई निघाली,

मुलाच्या घरी पोचली,
