प्रेरणा खूप प्रयत्न करत होती, तिला आता गांभीर्याने अभ्यास करायचा होता. पण साधा syllabus काढायलाही तिला वेळ मिळत नसे. तिची चिडचिड होऊ लागली..आदित्यला तिने बोलून दाखवलं..

“आदित्य तू म्हणाला होतास की मला परीक्षेसाठी मदत करशील म्हणून..”

“करेल की मग, तुला हो म्हटलो ना मी..”

“नुसतं हो म्हणालास? अरे पण त्यासाठी तुलाही काही जबाबदाऱ्या घ्याव्या लागतील त्याचं काय? कधीही बघतेय मी..मला वाटलेलं तू वीर ला सांभाळशील, मला वेळ मिळू देशील पण नाही..”

“मलाही कामं असतात ..”

“कसली कामं? मोबाईल वर मुव्ही पाहायचं इतकंच ना?”

“मी दिवसभर ऑफिसमध्ये थकून आल्यानंतर घरीही दमायचं का? मला आराम नको का?”

“मग कशाला म्हटलास मला की परीक्षा दे म्हणून..”

“दे की परीक्षा.. थोडा थोडा अभ्यास करत जा..”

आता तर भिंतीवर डोकं आपटून घ्यावं असं प्रेरणाला वाटू लागलं. एकीकडे आदित्य परीक्षा दे म्हणत होता पण दुसरीकडे त्यासाठी थोडा त्याग करण्याची त्याची अजिबात तयारी नव्हती. ऑफिसवरून घरी येणं आणि आल्यावर आराम करणं या त्याच्या रुटीन मध्ये बदल त्याला मान्य नव्हता.. त्याला सवयच झालेली त्याची. त्यामुळे तो कितीही म्हटला तरी त्याच्याडून सहकार्याची अपेक्षा करणं काही उपयोगाचं नाही हे तिच्या लक्षात आलं.

मोठ्या मुश्किलीने तिने शेवटी सर्व syllabus लिहून घेतला. आता एकेक पुस्तकं आणून अभ्यासाला सुरवात करायची होती. पण हे सगळं करताना घरातली कामं करून मगच याला वेळ द्यायचा असा तिचा हट्ट असायचा. एखादं काम सोडून हे करायला घेणं तिला आवडायचं नाही. कमळी भांडी, फरशी तर करून जायची पण बाकीची साफसफाई, कपडे, स्वयंपाक या कामात प्रेरणाचा बराच वेळ जाई. 

आठवडाभर प्रेरणाने पुस्तकांची माहिती जमा केली, इंटरनेट वरून जी माहिती मिळाली तीही जपून ठेवली. अश्यातच गावाकडून तिच्या सासूबाई तिच्याकडे राहायला आल्या. सासूबाईंना प्रेरणाचं फार कौतुक. तिचं घराला टापटीप ठेवणं आणि उत्तम स्वयंपाक करणं त्यांना फार आवडायचं. त्यामुळे मुलाच्या संसाराची चिंता त्यांना अजिबात नव्हती. 

प्रेरणाची कामं वाढली. सासूबाई चांगल्या महिनाभर तिथे होत्या. बोलताना त्यांच्या मुलीचं कौतुक सतत सांगत असायच्या..

“आपली केतकी, तिला बढती मिळाली बरं का..काय बाई तो थाट, घरी घ्यायला सोडायला गाडी येते म्हणे..”

प्रेरणा आपल्या नणंदबाईचं कौतुक कौतुकाने ऐकत असे.तिलाही केतकीचा अभिमान वाटायचा. पण एक गोष्ट सासूबाईना खटकायची, कमळी घरातली इतकी कामं आवरून जाते मग प्रेरणा करते तरी काय? फक्त साफसफाई आणि स्वयंपाक? मान्य की घरात पैसे आहेत भरपूर, पण म्हणून प्रेरणा इतकी अकार्यशील आहे का? 

एक दिवस वीर सोबत खेळत असताना त्यांना प्रेरणा ने प्रिंट काढलेली काही कागदं सापडली..

“मी अडाणी आहे, पण मला माणसाचा चेहरा वाचता येतो. गेले काही दिवस तू फार घाईत दिसतेस. सगळं आवरून तुला काहीतरी करायचं असतं. कसल्यातरी विचारात असतेस..काय झालंय?”

प्रेरणा अखेर सासूबाईंना खरं सांगते..

“आई, माझी खूप ईच्छा होती नोकरी करायची, पण लग्न लवकर झालं..आता मी या सरकारी परीक्षा द्यायचा विचार करतेय, त्या दिल्या आणि पास झाले तर मोठी ऑफिसर बनता येईल मला..”

सासूबाई कितीतरी वेळ शांत होत्या. प्रेरणाला वाटलं सासूबाईंना आवडलं नसावं..सासूबाई तिथून निघून गेल्या. प्रेरणाला वाटलं उगाच सांगितलं..थोड्या वेळाने सासुबाई परत आल्या..आणि प्रेरणाच्या हातावर एक धागा बांधला..

“हा धागा मी मंदिरातून आणला होता, माझ्या मुलाची भरभराट व्हावी म्हणून..पण त्याची भरभराट तेव्हाच होईल जेव्हा त्याच्या घरातली लक्ष्मी चार माणसात चमकेल. खूप मेहनत घे, पास हो..मी आहे तुझ्या मदतीला..”

सासूबाईंनी आनंदाचा धक्काच दिला होता. सासूबाई होत्या तोवर त्यांनी वीर ला पूर्णवेळ सांभाळलं, त्यांना माहीत होतं की वीर चा प्रश्न मिटला तरच प्रेरणाला अभ्यासाला वेळ मिळेल म्हणून..या काळात प्रेरणाने बरीच माहिती जमा केली आणि ती अभ्यासाला लागली. सासूबाईंनी आदित्यलाही समजावलं की कोमलने आता नवा ध्यास घेतला आहे, तर तिला सहकार्य कर म्हणून..पण ते सगळं व्यर्थ जाणार हे कोमलला माहीतच होतं.

सासूबाईंना आता गावी परत जावं लागणार होतं. प्रेरणाला आता पुन्हा आधीसारखा संघर्ष करावा लागणार होता. त्यांनी साश्रुनयनाने निरोप दिला.

“ताईसाहेब तुम्ही हे पुस्तकं का धरून बसताय रोज?”

“अगं.. मी परीक्षा द्यायचा विचार करतेय..”

“परीक्षा? कॉलेज अर्धवट राहिलेलं का तुमचं..”

“अगं नाही गं, या सरकारी परीक्षा असतात. यात पास झालं की।मोठं अधिकारी होता येतं..”

कमळीच्या चेहऱ्यावर कळी फुलली,

“काय सांगता ताईसाहेब.. तुम्हाला एक सांगू? तुम्ही खूप हुशार आहात, मेहनती आहात..तुम्ही नक्की पास व्हाल. तुम्हाला अधिकारीन बाई झालेलं पाहून मला कसलं छान वाटेल काय सांगू..”

तेवढ्यात आदित्य घरी येतो. फ्रेश होऊन बसतो. प्रेरणा त्याला चहा देऊन पुस्तकांची एक लिस्ट पुढे करते..

“अहो, एवढी पाहिजेत मला..”

आदित्य लिस्ट बघतो..
