 गेल्या काही दिवसांपासून राधाबाईंचे त्यांच्या माहेरी फोनवर फोन सुरू होते. बोलतांना अत्यंत केविलवाणे होऊन राधाबाई त्यांची समजूत घालत होत्या. काय करावं त्यांना समजत नव्हतं, सासर आणि माहेर या द्वंद्वात अडकलेल्या राधाबाईंची मनस्थिती ढासळतच चालली होती.

राधाबाई साधारण पन्नाशीतल्या, पूर्वायुष्य तसं खडतरच हिट, एका लहानश्या खेडेगावात जन्मलेल्या, 3 बहिणी अन 2 भाऊ असा मोठा परिवार. मुली म्हणजे डोक्याला भार अश्या समजुतीचा तो समाज. आई वडील अन भावंडांनी केवळ एक जबाबदारी म्हणून तिघी बहिणींची लग्न घाईत उरकली. राधाबाई शहरात आल्या, नवऱ्याचा रागीट स्वभाव, पोटी जन्माला आलेली 2 मुलं हे सगळं सांभाळत त्यांनी संसाराचा गाडा ओढला.

राधाबाईंना 2 मुलं, चांगली शिकलेली, शहरात वाढलेली अन आधुनिक विचारांची. शहरात आल्यामुळे राधाबाई अन कुटुंबाची जीवनसरणी सुधारली होती. मुलं वयात आली तशी त्यांना माहेराहून खूप बोलावणं येऊ लागलं.

राधाबाईंच्या घरात भावाच्या मुलींना सून करण्याची पद्धत होती. लग्नानंतर राधाबाईंना केवळ कर्तव्य म्हणून भाऊ बोलवत,त्यांची लग्न झाली तशी बहिणी त्यांना नको नको होऊ लागल्या. आई वडील तेवढे फक्त लेकीची वाट बघत, पण त्यांचंही वय झालेलं अन सगळा कारभार मुलांच्या हातात होता, त्यामुळे ईच्छा असूनही मुलींसाठी त्यांना फार काही करता यायचं नाही.

खेडेगावकडे राहिलेल्या भावांना आपल्या मुली शहरात नांदाव्या असं वाटत होतं, मोठ्या भावाला अन लहान भावाला प्रत्येकी एकेक मुली होत्या. त्या दोघींना राधाच्या घरी द्यावं असं त्यांना वाटे. दोघी मुली अभ्यासात हुशार नव्हत्या आणि ऍक्टिव्ह नव्हत्या, सहसा त्यांना इतर स्थळांकडून नकारच मिळत असे, मग बहिणीने आपल्या मुलींना सून करून आपल्यावर उपकार करावे असं त्यांना वाटे.

राधाबाईंची मुलं दिसायला देखणी अन हुशार होती, मामाच्या मुली त्यांना अजिबात शोभणाऱ्या नव्हत्या, मुलांनी तात्काळ नकार दिला. मुलांपुढे राधाबाईंचं काय चालणार?? कशीबशी त्या माहेरी समजूत घालत होत्या.कधी भावाच्या बायकोची मनधरणी तर कधी भावाची..त्यात त्यांच्या आई वडिलांची मात्र गळचेपी होत असे.
