आपली माणसं

 मानसीला पाचवा महिना सुरू होता. घरात इतकी सगळी माणसं असताना तिला स्वतःची विशेष अशी काळजी घ्यावीच लागायची नाही. सासूबाई कोडकौतुक पुरवत होत्या, जाउबाई वेगवेगळे पुस्तकं आणून देत होत्या, जेठ, दीर सर्वजण मानसीला पूर्णपणे जपत होते. मानसीची पहिलीच वेळ असल्याने खरं तर तिला फार गम्मत वाटायची, वाढलेलं पोट, पोटातली हालचाल, डोहाळे..सगळ्याचा आनंद ती लुटत होती. विजयसुद्धा नवरा म्हणून योग्य ती काळजी घेत होता. 

बाळाच्या येण्याची चाहूल लागली अन विजय चं प्रमोशन झालं, बाळाचा पायगुण म्हणून विजयसाठी तो एक खास क्षण होता. विजयच्या वडिलांनी गावाकडची जमीन नुकतीच विकली होती, त्यातून मिळालेल्या पैशांचे व्यवस्थापन करायची जबाबदारी विजय आणि अरविंदाला दिलेली. अरविंद आपला व्याप सांभाळून ही कामं बघायचा, पण विजयने मात्र घरातील व्यवहारातून पूर्णपणे त्याचं अंग काढून घेतलेलं. मिळालेली रक्कम अर्धी विजयकडे तो देत होता, पण विजय मात्र “दादा तूच बघ ते..”म्हणत दुर्लक्ष करत होता. एकदा विजयला अचानक कंपनी कडून बाहेरच्या शहरात बदलीसाठी ऑर्डर आली. शहर मोठं होतं, पगारही जास्त त्यामुळे विजय खुश होता. मानसीच्या बाळंतपण चा प्रश्न होता पण ते आता सासरीच होणार होतं. तिच्या आई वडिलांना तिने स्वतःहून नाही सांगितलेलं. मोठ्या शहरात भाड्याने राहण्यापेक्षा वडिलांच्या आलेल्या रकमेतून घरच विकत घ्यावं असं विजयने ठरवलं..तो अरविंद कडे गेला अन त्याच्या वाटचे पैसे मागू लागला..

“अरे ते आता मिळणं कठीण आहे..निदान 2 वर्ष तरी नाही मिळणार..”

“दादा मला गरज आहे पैशांची..”

“तुला इतके दिवस सांगत होतो तेव्हा दुर्लक्ष केलंस..”

“मला माहित नव्हतं असं काही होईल..”

“तुझी चूक..”

“पण तू तरी माझ्या वाटच्या पैशांना कशाला हात लावलेस?? राहू द्यायचे ना ते बाबांच्या खात्यात..”

“पैसे तिथे ठेवणं सुरक्षित नव्हतं, लगेच काहीतरी गुंतवणूक करणं भाग होतं.. तू संशय घेतोय माझ्यावर??”

शब्दाला शब्द लागला..अरविंदने पुढचा विचार करूनच विजय च्या वाटचे पैसे फिक्स डिपॉझिट मध्ये टाकलेले..जे तो त्यालाच देणार होता पण विजय आततायी होता, त्याला ते लगेच हवे होते..

दोघा भावात कडाक्याचे भांडण झाले..घरातल्या लोकांनी समजूत घालण्याचा प्रयत्न केला पण वाद आता टोकाला पोहोचला होता.. जाउबाई सुद्धा आता मानसी सोबत तुटकपणे वागू लागल्या, विजयचं असा संशय घेणं अन मोठ्या भावाला घालूनपाडून बोलणं त्यांनाही सहन झालं नव्हतं.

अखेर विजयने मानसीला घेऊन नवीन शहरात नेण्याचा निर्णय घेतला, तिच्या बाळंतपण साठी तिच्या आईला बोलवायचं त्याने ठरवलं. सासूबाईंनी मानसीच्या काळजीपोटी तिला इथेच राहू दे सांगितलं पण विजयने कुणाचंही ऐकलं नाही. मानसीला सुद्धा घर सोडवत नव्हतं पण नवऱ्याच्या हट्टापायी तीही नवीन शहरात शिफ्ट झाली. 

नवीन फ्लॅट होता, ओळख व्हायला काही वेळ गेला. विजयच्या ऑफिसमधले मित्र अन त्यांचं कुटुंब घरी येऊ लागलं. विजयचा मित्रपरिवार खूप वाढला. मानसीच्या अवस्थेला पाहून “काही मदत लागली की नक्की कळवा..”असं मित्रांनी कायम आश्वासन दिलं.. मानसी मात्र दिवसभर सैरभैर होई, माणसांच्या गराड्यात आणि सासरच्या मायाळू लोकांमध्ये राहण्याची तिला सवय, इथे येऊन तिला अगदी नकोसं झालेलं..

नववा महिना लागला, मानसीच्या आईने फोन केला..

“केव्हाही कळ येईल, तू हॉस्पिटलची बॅग भरून ठेव..बाळासाठी बाळातने, कपडे, टोपी, शाल सगळं आणायला सांग..मी येतेच एक दोन दिवसात..एकदा मोकळी झालीस की तुला नागलीची खीर, पातळ जेवणच खावं लागेल..दुधासाठी एक पावडर आणते, सीझर झालं तर काही दिवस वरचं द्यावं लागेल..”

मानसीला सासूबाई अन जाऊबाईंची आठवण येऊ लागलेली, त्या असत्या तर बॅग भरून कधीच तयार ठेवली असती. सतत माझ्या अवतीभवती राहिल्या असत्या..

संध्याकाळी आईचा परत फोन..वडील बोलत होते..

“अगं आई पायरीवरून जोरात पडली..पाय फ्रॅक्चर झालाय..तिला लगेच यायला नाही जमणार, 15 दिवस थांब.. येऊ आम्ही..”

एवढं ऐकून फोन ठेवला अन मानसीच्या पोटात कळा सुरू झाल्या..तिने ताबडतोब विजयला फोन केला अन तो घरी आला..

“अहो कसं व्हायचं आता..तुम्ही घरी भांडण करून घेतलं, आणि माझी आई पायरीवरून पडली.. तीही येणार नाही..आता कसं होईल माझं बाळंतपण?? कोण करेल??”

“घाबरू नकोस, कुणाकडेही हात पसरवायचे नाहीत…माझे भरपुर मित्र आहेत..त्यांच्या बायकाही चांगल्या आहेत..एका हाकेवर धावून येतील बघ…तू काय काळजी करते मी असताना..” 

विजय गुर्मीतच बोलत होता. एकेक मित्राला तो फोन लावत होता. बाळंतपण चं ओझं उचलायला मात्र कुणीही तयार नव्हतं, एकेकजण काहीही कारणं देत होतं..

“माझी बायको माहेरी आहे..”

“मला बरं नाहीये..”

“माझ्या मुलाची परीक्षा आहे..”

आता मात्र विजय एकदम हतबल झाला..घाईने रिक्षा बोलवून मानसीला हॉस्पिटलमध्ये नेलं..काही तास तिला वाट बघायला लावली..इंजेक्शन देण्यात आलं..ती आत कळवळत होती अन विजय तर बाहेर अगदी रडकुंडीला आला..काही तासांनी तिला आत घेण्यात आलं..डॉक्टरांची धावपळ सुरू झाली, क्षणात एका बाळाचा रडण्याचा आवाज आला..विजयचं सगळं मन त्या आवाजाकडे लागलेलं..नर्स धावतच बाहेर आली..

“बाळाला गुंडाळायला कपडे द्या..आणि बाळाला बाहेर आणतोय, कोण बाईमाणुस असेल त्यांना लवकर घेऊन या इकडे..”

विजय पुरता गोंधळला. मित्र आहेत म्हणत गुर्मीत असलेला विजय फक्त स्तब्ध उभा राहिला..

नर्स परत बाहेर आली,

“हे काय? तुम्ही इथेच?? नातेवाईक वगैरे कुणी नाही का सोबत? की एकट्यानेच सगळं करणार आहात??”

विजय डोळ्यात पाणी आणून फक्त बघत होता..

“कोण म्हणे जवळचं कुणी नाही का..हे घ्या बाळाला गुंडाळायला कपडे.. सूनबाई, ही बॅग ठेव जा आत..सगळे कपडे वर काढून ठेव, बाळ सारखं ओलं करेल. आणि मानसी साठी खास जेवण असलेला डबाही वर काढून ठेव…भाकरीचा तुकडा आन, दृष्ट काढू दे आधी बाळाची..”

“आई बाळाला पहिले मी हातात घेणार..”

“गप गं.. मी लाडका काका आहे त्याचा.. आधी मीच घेणार..”

“अन बाळाचा आजोबा काय करणार?? मी घेणार त्याला आधी..”

एकेक करत विजयच्या घरातील सर्व मंडळी गर्दी करू लागली अन नर्स मोठा आ करत बघतच राहिली..

“ओ मॅडम, विजय एकटा नाही..एवढी मोठी फौज आहे त्याच्यासोबत..जा आना बाळाला..”

विजय त्याच्या कुटुंबाकडे बघतच राहिला..

ते काहीही असो, कितीही मित्र असले अन कितीही ओळखी असल्या तरी शेवटी आपलीच माणसं कामाला येतात..हे तसूभरही खोटं नाही..
