“खबरदार कोणी औक्षण करायला जाल तर!.” गुणवंताबाई कडाडल्या.सुगंधा नववधूच्या वेशात तशीच उभी होती. तेवढ्यात केशर स्वतः पुढे झाली. तिने दोघांना औक्षण केले. सुगंधा महालाचा उंबरा ओलंडून आत आली. सुभानरावांनी तिची आपल्या खास दालनात व्यवस्था केली. केशर आणि इतरांना राहायला स्वतंत्र व्यवस्था केली. इकडे सगुणाबाई प्रचंड उद्विग्न अवस्थेत दालनात येरझाऱ्या घालत होत्या. तेवढ्यात गुणवंताबाई आत आल्या.”आत्या,शेवटी काय लागले आमच्या हाती?” सगुणाबाई रागाने म्हणाल्या.”सगुणा,अशा कितीतरी जणी येतात आणि जातात. इनामदार घरातील स्त्रियांना हे नवीन नाही.”गुणवंताबाई समजूत काढू लागल्या.” पण माझ्या घरात आजवर कोणी घुसले नव्हते.”ओठ दाताखाली दाबत सगुणाबाई बोलल्या.”सगुणा,कधीतरी हे होणारच होते. अशा किती जणी आल्या पण कोणीच ह्या महालात इनामदार स्त्रियांची जागा घेऊ शकले नाही. कोणतीही दुसरी स्त्री इथे टिकत नाही.” गुणवंताबाई हसत म्हणाल्या.”म्हणजे? समजले नाही?”सगुणाबाई साशंक स्वरात विचारू लागल्या.”सगुणा,अशा स्त्रियांना बाहेर काढायचे कसब असायला हवे. मी आहे ना! लवकरच ही सुगंधा महालातून बाहेर जाईल आणि नाहीच गेली तर जीवनातून जाईल.”गुणवंता बाईंचे डोळे लाल झाले होते.” आत्या,खरेच असे होईल?”सगुणाबाई त्यांना बिलगल्या.”पोरी मी तुला शब्द देते. सुगंधाला लवकरच इथून बाहेर जावे लागेल.”सगुणाबाई हळुहळू शांत झाल्या.इकडे दालनात आल्यावर सुगंधाने आधी देवघरात जाऊन प्रार्थना केली.”सुगंधा,तुम्ही खुश आहात ना?”सुभानराव म्हणाले.”आजवर उघड्यावरच जीवन जगत आले. आज तुम्ही मला एका संसारी स्त्रीचे सुख दिले आहे. त्या बदल्यात माझे प्राणही मागितले तर देईल.”सुगंधा हळूच त्यांच्याजवळ येऊन बसली.त्यानंतर कितीतरी वेळ ते दोघे बोलत होते. बोलता बोलता कधी झोप लागली समजले देखील नाही.दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी सुभानराव जरा उशिराने जागे झाले. बाजूला सुगंधा नव्हती. ते उठून बसले इतक्यात सुगंधा स्नान करून येताना दिसली.
ओले केस,चेहऱ्यावर त्यातून सांडलेले थेंब, अंगाशी घट्ट असलेली साडी आणि सोबत अप्रतिम लावण्य. सुभानराव तिच्याजवळ गेले.”असे काय बघताय?”सुगंधा लाजून खाली पाहू लागली.सुभानरावांनी हळूच तिची हनुवटी धरून वर उचलली. तिच्या मनमोहक टपोऱ्या डोळ्यात स्वतः ला हरवून ते तसेच बघत राहिले.”अहो! सोडा आता. बाहेर जायचं आहे ना?”सुगंधा दूर होऊ लागली.त्यांनी अचानक तिला स्वतः कडे ओढले.”सुगंधा, स्त्रीदेह अनेक भोगले परंतु जी ओढ तुझ्यासाठी आहे ती अलौकिक आहे.”त्यांनी हळूवार तिच्या कपाळावर आपले ओठ टेकवले आणि झरकन निघून गेले.एक पुरुष असा जवळ आलेला सुगंधाला नवीन होते. आज सुभानरावांनी तिला पूर्ण जिंकले होते. संयम आणि प्रेम यांचा विजय झाला होता.थोड्याच वेळात सुभानराव तयार झाले. तेवढ्यात एक दासी निरोप घेऊन आली.”मालक,धाकल्या मालकीणबाईंनी बोलावल हाय.””सगुणाबाईंना सांगा आम्ही आज येणार नाही.”सुभानराव म्हणाले.”माझे एक ऐकाल?”सुगंधा हळूवार आवाजात म्हणाली.”सांगून तर बघ.”इनामदार खट्याळ हसले.”तुम्ही थोरल्या बाईंना भेटायला जा. मी आले आणि त्यांच्यात अन तुमच्यात दुरावा आला. असे मला चालणार नाही.”सुगंधा एकेक शब्द काळजीने उच्चारत होती.दासी तिथेच थांबून होती.”इनामदार येत आहेत असा निरोप दे.”सुगंधाने दासीला निरोप घेऊन पाठवले.सुभानराव सगुणाबाईंच्या दालनात आले.”इकडची वाट लक्षात आहे तर?”सगुणाबाई म्हणाल्या.”सगुणाबाई तुमच्या हक्कावर काहीच गदा येणार नाही. सुगंधा येण्या अगोदर असलेले स्थान तुमचेच राहील.”सुभानराव म्हणाले.”अर्थातच, एक तमाशात नाचणारी आमची जागा घेऊच शकत नाही.”सगुणाबाई फणकाऱ्याने म्हणाल्या.”खबरदार! सगुणाबाई. आता त्या आमच्या पत्नी आहेत.”इनामदार धारदार आवाजात म्हणाले.”अशा बायका फक्त शरीराची भूक भागवू शकतात. संसार नाही करू शकत.”सगुणाबाई बेभान होऊन बोलत होत्या आणि पुढच्या क्षणी सनकन त्यांच्या कानफटात मारून सुभानराव दालनातून बाहेर पडले.
घडलेल्या घटनेमुळे दोन क्षण सगुणाबाई सुन्न झाल्या. आपल्यासोबत असे काही होईल याचा स्वप्नातही त्यांनी विचार केला नव्हता. सगुणाबाईंनी आपला एकही अश्रू सांडू दिला नाही.”ज्या सुगंधामुळे आज हा अपमान झाला तिला मी सोडणार नाही.”सगुणाबाईंनी मनाशी निर्धार केला.एक सुडाची कहाणी नकळत आकार घेत होती. इकडे सुभानराव लगेच परत आलेले पाहून सुगंधा अचंबित झाली. परंतु त्यांची एकंदर मनस्थिती पाहून सुगंधा शांत राहिली. थोडा वेळ गेल्यावर तिने शांतपणे सुभानरावांना खायला दिले. तेवढ्यात देवळात जाण्यासाठी निरोप घेऊन शिपाई आला.”सुगंधा,तुम्ही चला बरोबर.”सुभानराव म्हणाले.”नाही,आता ह्या सुंदर उत्सवी वातावरणाला भांडणाचे गालबोट नको.”सुगंधाचा समजूतदरपणा पाहून सुभानराव आनंदित झाले.आपले मन तिच्याकडे ओढले जाण्याची कारणे त्यांना आता उमगत होते. सुभानराव एकटेच देवळात जायला बाहेर पडले.सुभानराव बाहेर गेलेले पाहताच केशर सुगंधाला भेटायला आली.
