चंदन आणि चंदा दोघेही जुळे भावंडे होते. चंदन चुलबुला, बोलका सर्वांच्या मनाला क्षणार्धात आपलेसे करणारा होता. चंदा मात्र शांत, लाजरी-बुजरी होती. कोणी विचारल तरच त्यांच्या प्रश्नांच फक्त उत्तरे देत होती.
अंतिमतिच्या या शांतपणावर घराच्या शेजारी राहणारे लोक, नातेवाईक श्यामराव आणि श्यामलीला अनेकदा बोलत होते.”चंदन किती बोलतो छान आणि चंदा का बर अशी. तिला पोपटाचा उष्टा पेरु खायला दिला होता का?”” आज नाहीतर उद्या ती नक्की बोलेल, एखाद्याला नसते सवय बोलयची फारस.” श्यामली जरा वरच्या सूरात येवून आपल्या शेजारच्यांना सांगत होती.
पोरं आता हळूहळू मोठ झाली होती. तसे त्यांना शाळेत टाकण्यात आले होते. चंदन शाळेच्या परीक्षेत अव्वल ठरत होता. पहिल्या क्रमांकाने उत्तीर्ण झाला होता. चंदा मात्र अभ्यास करुन देखील जेमतेम काठावर पास होत होती.चंदाचा अभ्यास घेताना तिला प्रेमाने, अनेक उदाहरणे देत समजवून सांगण्याचा चंदन, आई-वडिलांनी प्रयत्न केला होता. परंतु चंदाला मात्र खेळ, आईसोबत किचन मधे लुडबूड करण्यातचं दिवस संपत होते.नातेवाईंकाच्या सांगण्यावरुन बाहेर चंदाला क्लास लावण्यात आले होते. तरीही तिला जेवढे मार्क पाडायचे होते. तितकेच पडत होते.” तिला ज्यात रस आहे तेच काम करु द्या चंदाला. उगाच शिक्षणाकरता पैसा खर्च करण्यापेक्षा एखादा चांगला कोर्स करुन तिथे तरी तिचे नाव कमवेल असे बघा काहीतरी.” नातेवाईक फोन करुन श्मामरावांना सांगत होते.
” पोरगी वयात आली असेल तर सरळ लग्न करुन टाका तिचे कशाला उगाच विचार करत बसता पुढचा.” श्यामरावांचा मित्र सुनिल बोलत होता.” कोवळ्या वयात पोरीचं लग्न तरी कसं करुन द्यायचं,तिला जबाबदारी तरी घेता यायल्या हवी.” श्यामराव आपल्या पत्नीशी बोलत होते.” आधीच ती कोणाशी फारशी बोलत नाही. दबाव आणून जर तिला कोणी त्रास दिला तर एवढासा जीव काय करणार ओ….नकोच त्यापेक्षा लग्न एवढ्या लवकर करुन द्यायला तिचं.” विचारांच काहूर गुंतल्यासारखे श्यामली श्यामरावांना सांगत होती.
दिवस जसे पुढे सरकत होते तसा अनेक वर्षांचा काळही पुढे सरकत चालला होता. चंदन शिक्षण घेवून इंजिनियर बनला होता. चंदा मात्र शिवणकलेचा कोर्स करुन ड्रेस, ब्लाऊज शिवत होती. तसेच खाण्याच्या आॅर्डर देखील घेत होती. काही ना काही चंदा करते हे पाहून आई-वडिल चंदावर खूश होते.” चंदन एवढा शिकला आहे. त्याचे आता दोनाचे चार हात करायले हवे. आमच्या ओळखीतले स्थळ आहे चांगले.” श्यामलीची मैत्रिण सुलभा बोलत होती.” सूनबाई तर आणायल हवी आणा घरात. मला तरी कुठे पटापट जमतात आता काम.” श्यामला बोलत होती.” तुझी लेक आहे ना. ती नाही मदत करत का कामात. की नुसत आपलं शिवणकाम करत बसते. जरा तिला भाजी आणायला पाठवत जा. घराबाहेरची काम करायला शिकव जरा. ती पण लग्नला आली आहे आता.” सुलभा बोलत होती.” अग तिला जमेल तसे सगळे छान काम आवरते माझी लेक.” श्यामली बोलत होती.
” जास्त डोक्यावर नको बसवून ठेवू नाहीतर एक दिवस जाईल कोणाबरोबर तरी पळून ती. तेव्हा काय करशील तू.” सुलभा बोलत होती.” चांगलच होईल मग. आमचा लग्न करुन देण्यचा खर्च वाचेल तेवढाच.” मनात राग येवून देखील हसत ती बाजू श्यामलीने मारुन नेली होती.” तू तेवढे स्थळ चंदनला दाखव आणि मला सांग म्हणजे तसे आपण पुढची बोलणी करायला मुलीच्या घरच्यांना सांगू.” सुलभा बोलत होती.लग्नाचा विषय चंदन जवळ निघाला होता. पहिले आपल्या बहिणीचे लग्न झाल्या शिवाय मी लग्न करणार नाही असे चंदनने सांगितले होते. चंदाला आता मागणी बघायला सुरवात केली होती. चंदाच्या सावळेपणा मुळे फारस कोणी तिला पसंतच करत नव्हते.” अस किती दिवस गप्प बसणार आहात. आमच्याकडे चंदन करता खूप स्थळ आहेत. त्याचे लावून द्या आता लग्न. तिच्यामुळे तोही रखडला जाईल नाहीतर.” सुलभा पुन्हा दुसरं स्थळ घेवून श्यामली कडे आली होती.हे सर्व चंदनच्या कानावर ऐकू आले होते.” काकी मी चंदाच लग्न झाल्या शिवाय नाही उभा राहणार लग्नाला. मी असचा राहिलो तरी चालेल, तुम्ही उगाच आईला असा त्रास नका देत जावू.” चंदन बोलत होता.या सगळ्या गोष्टी ऐकून श्यामली चंदन आणि चंदा बाबत कोणता निर्णय घेईल? चंदाच्या आधी चंदनचे लग्न होईल का? पाहूया अंतिम भागात.
अंतिम भाग
मागच्या भागात आपण चंदन आणि चंदाच्या लग्ना बाबतची चर्चा ऐकली होती.
” हे बघ पोरा, तुझ्या इच्छे विरुद्ध मी तुझ लग्न चंदाच्या आधी करणार नाही. लोकांच फक्त ऐकायचं करायचं तर आपल्याच म्हणण्या प्रमाणे. ते बोलतात त्यातले हिताच्या गोष्टी ऐकायच्या. बाकीचे सोडून द्यायचे.” श्यामली चंदनला समजावत होती.
आपली आई खंबीर आहे पाहत चंदनची चिंता आता मिटली होती. तो नव्या जोमाने आपल्या कामावर लक्ष केंद्रित करत होता. त्याला आता अनेक ठिकाणी साईट सांगून आल्या होत्या.
त्याचा साहेब त्याच्यावर प्रचंड खूश होता. लवकरच चंदनच्या घरातल्यांशी देखील साहेबांची भेट झाली होती. एकंदर पाहता साहेबांना चंदन जावई म्हणून पसंत पडला होता. घरी आपल्या मुलीचा हात मागायला एक दिवस चंदनचे साहेब स्वत: आले होते.चंदनने आपली अट साहेबांना सांगितली होती. ती अट मान्य करत तरीही माझ्या मुलीच लग्न तुझ्याशीच करुन देण्याचा हट्ट साहेबांनी धरला होता.हि लग्नाच्या बोलणीची बातमी वा-यासारखी सर्वत्र पसरली होती.” अग एवढं चांगल स्थळ त्या चंदामुळे सोडून देवू नका.” सुलभा बोलत होती.” लग्न नाहीतर निदान साखरपुडा तरी करुन घ्या.” नातेवाईक बोलत होते.” दादा, माझ्या करता तू थांबू नको. माझं लग्न होईल तेव्हा होईल. नाहीतर मी अशीच राहिल. पण माझ्यामुळे तुझ्या सुखाच्या क्षणांना थांबवू नकोस.” चंदा आपला भाऊ चंदनला सांगत होती.
” आली मोठी शहाणी. शांत शांत म्हणून खूपच बोलयला लागली तू तर आता. तुझ लग्न लावल्या शिवाय मी लग्न करणार नाही.” चंदन आपली बहिण चंदाला बोलत होता.चंदाच लग्न होण्या आधी आपण चंदनला एकदा विचारावं असा विचार मंथनच्या मनात आला होता. मंथनने एकदा भीतभीतच भेटायला बोलवले होते.इकडच्या – तिकडच्या बोलणी झाल्यवर आपलं असणार चंदावरच प्रेम मंथनने भीतभीतचं चंदनला सांगितले होते. यावर खूश होवून चंदनने आनंदाने मंथनला मिठी मारली होती.मंथन हा एक नामांकित डाॅक्टर होता. त्याला आपली बहिण आवडते हा तर दुग्धशर्करा युक्त योगच म्हणावा लागणार होता. कधी एकदा घरी जावून हि बातमी सांगतो असे चंदनला झाले होते.”घरी आल्या आल्या सगळ्यांनी लवकर हाॅलमध्ये या. मला बोलयचं आहे तुम्हा सर्वांशी.” चंदन बोलत होता.” श्वास तरी घे आधी जरा. काय झालं एवढे धापा टाकत बोलायला. बरा आहेस ना तू.” आई काळजीने विचारत होती.
” जे काही आहे लवकर सांग. काळजी करण्यासारख नाही ना काही.” बाबा बोलत होते.” माझ्यासाठी एखादी मोठी शिवण्याची आॅर्डर घेवून आलास का दादा.” चंदा बोलत होती.” सगळे आपल्या परीने तर्क लावून झाले असतील तर मी थोड बोलू का.” चंदन बोलत होता.” अरे बोल ना मग पटकन. किती आढेवेढे घेतो आहेस तू तरी.” श्यामली बोलत होती.” मला आज मंथन भेटला होता.” चंदन बोलत होता.” हो का छान. खूप छान डाॅक्टर आहे तो. मागे माझा कान सारखा दुखत होता. त्याच्या गोळ्या – औषधांनी चांगला फरक पडला होता मला.” बाबा बोलत होते.” अवो त्यांना आपली चंदा आवडते. तिच्याशी लग्न करण्याकरता माझ्याशी बोलत होते.” चंदन बोलत होता.” माझ्या पोरीनं नशिबचं काढल म्हणायचं.” श्यामली आनंदाने बोलत होती.चंदा तर आनंदाने लाजून आत निघून गेली होती.”लग्नाची बोलणी ताबडतोब करण्याकरता मंथन रावांना बोलवून घे चंदन तू.”श्यामराव बोलत होते.मंथन आणि घरातले दुस-या दिवशी घरी आले होते. घरच्या घरी छोटासा साखरपुडा करुन लग्नाची तारीख देखील ठरवण्यात आली होती.” बर झालं कोणाच्या सांगण्यावरुन आपण चंदाच लग्न लवकर लावून नाही दिले ते. लोक आपल्या चंदाला किती बोल लावत होते.” श्यामली श्यामरावांना सांगत होती.” लोकांची तोंड आपण धरु शकत नाही. ते कितीही बोलत असले तरी ऐकावे जनाचे आणि करावे मनाचे, हि म्हण का उगाच आहे का.” श्यामराव बोलत होते.
थाटामाटात चंदाच लग्न झाल्यावर काही महिन्यातच चंदनच्या साहेबांच्या मुली सोबत चंदनचे देखील लावण्यात आले होते.” लेक घरातून गेली पण दुसरी लेक लक्ष्मीच्या पावलांनी सून म्हणून घरात आली.”श्यामली बोलत होती.चंदन आणि चंदा हे दोघे भाऊ-बहिण सुखाने संसार करत होते. हे पाहून श्यामराव आणि श्यामली आनंदाने भरुन पावले होते.
