येते बाई मी.” टोपली डोक्यावर घेत ती जायला निघाली.
“आईऽऽ”
वच्छी वळली अन् त्याचवेळी एक मधुर आवाज कानावर आला.
“रत्ने?” तिला असे दारात बघून वच्छीने आश्चर्याने तोंडावर हात ठेवला.
रत्ना तिच्याकडे हसून बघत होती.
रत्ना.. कालपर्यंत परकर पोलकं घालणारी आणि आता फ्रॉक घालून मिरवत होती.
“आई, मी कशी दिसत्येय?” कडेवरच्या शरदला एका हाताने सावरत आणि दुसऱ्या हाताने फ्रॉकचे टोक पकडून उभी असलेली रत्ना वच्छीला विचारत होती.
“रत्ने, ही महागाची कापडं कुठून आणली? गरज नसताना कुणाकडून काही घ्यायचं नाही हे मी सांगितलं होतं ना?” कौतुक करायचे सोडून वच्छी तिच्यावर डाफरली तसा रत्नाचा चेहरा पडला.
“अय्या, रत्ना किती सुंदर दिसत आहेस? काकी, अहो तिच्यावर ओरडू नका. ती नाही म्हणत होती पण मीच जबरदस्तीने दिले. छानच दिसत आहेत की.” अंगणातून धावत आलेली गौरी धापा टाकत म्हणाली.
“हो पण..”
“वच्छी, अगं, एवढाश्या लेकरावर किती ओरडतेस? तसही गावात परकर पोलकं कुणी घालत नाहीत आणि या झग्यात कशी गोड दिसतेय तुझी लेक. तिचं कौतुक सोडून काय रागावत बसलीस?” वत्सलाबाई मध्ये पडल्या आणि वच्छीचा सूर खाली आला.
“हो बाई, पण..”
“तुझ्या मनाची घालमेल मला कळतेय. हे बघ, गौरीने काही तिचे नवे कपडे दिले नाहीत तर जे तिला होत नाहीत तेच दिलेत. उगाच कसलं दडपण घेऊ नकोस. जा आता.”
वत्सलाबाईंचे ऐकून वच्छीचा चेहरा वरमला. तिचे मन त्यांनी बरोबर जाणले होते. शेवटी आबासाहेबांच्या कारभारीण त्या. पाटलीणबाईंचा रुबाब अगदी शोभून दिसत होता.
“ए रत्ना, आत ये ना. तुला मी आमचं घर दाखवते.” आईसोबत परत जायला वळलेल्या रत्नाचा हात पकडून गौरीने अडवले.
रत्नाने आपल्या टपोऱ्या डोळ्यांनी वच्छीच्या नजरेचा अंदाज घेतला. वच्छीने डोळ्यांनीच तिला नकार कळवला होता.
“आता नको. आयला मदत करायची हाये ना.” तिचे ओठ हलले. मनात मात्र पाटलांच्या वाड्यात प्रवेश करण्याची इच्छा दडून बसली होती.
“गौरी, आलीस होय? मी गरम गरम थालीपीठ केली आहेत. ये आत. खायला वाढते. रत्ना तूही ये हो.” स्वयंपाकघरातून बाहेर आलेल्या इंदुताईंची नजर रत्नावर पडली तसे त्यांनी तिलाही थांबवून घेतले.
“नको. ती माझ्यासोबत बांधावर येतीय ना.”
“अगं अशा पावसाच्या दिवसात तिला कुठे घेऊन जातेस? तुम्ही दोघं जाऊन घर आवरून घ्या. नंतर पोरांना घेऊन जा. हिला इथंच खेळू दे की.” इंदूताईंच्या प्रेमळ स्वरात एक अधिकारवाणी होती. त्यांना नकार द्यायला वच्छीला जमले नाही.
“रत्ने, शऱ्याला नीट सांभाळशील ना?”
“व्हय. तू काळजी करू नगंसं.”
“रत्ने, हे मोठ्या माणसांच घर आहे. उगाच कुठं हातबोट लावून बघू नको. मला काय म्हणायचंय ते कळलं ना?” तिच्या कानाशी हळू आवाजात खुसपूस करत वच्छी निघून गेली.
रत्ना मात्र अजूनही बाहेरच घुटमळत होती. वच्छीने दिलेल्या तंबीमुळे आत जाऊन आपल्या हातून काही चुकीचं तर घडणार नाही ना?याची चिंता डोळ्यातून डोकावत होती.
“रत्ना, इथे उभी का? आत चल ना.” बाहेरून येणाऱ्या प्रकाशने काही कळायच्या आत तिचा हात पकडला आणि वाड्याचे दार ओलांडून त्याच्यासोबत ती आत आली.
हिरवेपाटलांच्या वाड्यातील तिचा पहिल्यांदा होणारा प्रवेश त्याच्या सोबतीने व्हावा हेच कदाचित विधिलिखित असावे. आत पोहचल्यावरही ती त्याच्याकडे टक लावून पाहत होती.
“पोरांनो हात धुवून घ्या आणि मग खायला बसा.” प्लेटमध्ये थालीपीठ घेऊन येत इंदुताई म्हणाल्या.
काकडीचे थालीपीठ! खूप दिवसांनी रत्ना त्याची चव चाखत होती. शरद तर पहिल्यांदा खात होता. त्याला ते आवडलंय हे कळत होतं. स्वतः लहान असूनही ती शरदची नीट काळजी घेत होती. त्याला खाऊ घालणे, त्याचे तोंड पुसणे, सारंच प्रेमाने करत होती. इवल्या वयात एक जबाबदारीची जाणीव तिच्या अंगात रुजली होती.
“आणखी वाढू?” इंदुताईंनी प्रेमाने विचारले.
“नको बाई पोट भरले.” तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर कृतज्ञता होती.
“अगं आईला बाई काय म्हणते? मी तुझ्या आईला काकी म्हणते तसं तू ही म्हण ना.” गौरी.
“नाही नको. तुझी आई धाकल्या पाटलीनबाई आहेत अन् सरपंचीनबाई बी. त्यांना मान द्यावाच लागन ना?” तिचे तत्वज्ञान ऐकून गौरीने डोक्याला हात मारून घेतला
“बरं चल. आता मी तुला माझी खोली दाखवते.”
“ए, तुझी एकटीची नाही हं माझीही खोली आहे.” गौरीचे वाक्य दुरुस्त करत प्रकाश म्हणाला तसं गौरीचे त्याच्याकडे बघून डोळे मोठे केले.
“हो, हो. तेच ते. आमची खोली. चल ना.”
रत्नाचा हात खेचतच गौरी तिला तिच्या खोलीत घेऊन गेली.
दोघांची ती मोठी खोली बघून रत्नाने मोठा आ वासला.
“एवढी मोठी खोली?” डोळ्यांची उघडझाप करत तिचा प्रश्न.
तिने सभोवताल नजर फिरवली. गौरीच्या विविध खेळण्या, कपडे, प्रकाश आणि गौरीची पुस्तकं.. तान्ह्या शरदला कडेवर घेऊन ती हरखून सारं न्याहाळत होती आणि गौरी तिला.
“रत्ना, तुला हा फ्रॉक खूप सुंदर दिसतोय. पण काय गं? काल तू मला नाही घ्यायला म्हणालीस आणि आज दादाकडून बरा घेतला?”
तिला हा प्रश्न केव्हाचा छळत होता. बाहेर वच्छी रत्नाला ओरडली तेव्हा फ्रॉक तिने दिल्याचे गौरी म्हणाली होती; आता मात्र सत्य काय हे तिला जाणून घ्यायचे होते. तेव्हा तिने तो विचारलेच.
“सांग ना.”
“ते तुझ्या दादाने सकाळी दिला. काल मी नाही म्हणले तर तू रडत होती ना?”
“म्हणजे तू केवळ दादाचेच ऐकतेस होय ना? मी तुझी मैत्रीण नव्हेच मुळी.”
नाही. तुझा दादा बोलला की आमची गौरी खूप छान आहे. तिला तुझ्याशी मैत्री करायची आहे. तू माज्यामुळं रडली तर मला लै वंगाळ वाटलं म्हणून मग घेतली.” कडेवरच्या शरदला खाली बसवून रत्नाने नाक फुगवून उभ्या असलेल्या गौरीचे हात पकडून म्हटले.
“नको मला तुझी मैत्री. तू तर दादाची मैत्रीण ना? त्याचेच तुला ऐकायचे असते.” रत्नाचे हात झिडकारून गौरी म्हणाली.
रत्नाला तिचा राग कसा घालवावा ते कळत नव्हते. तिच्या डोळ्यात पाणी जमा झाले.
“गौराबाई मला माफी द्या.” हात जोडून रत्ना हळवेपणाने तिच्यासमोर उभी होती.
“अगं..”
तिला तसे बघून गौरीला गलबलून आले.
“तू असे हात जोडू नकोस बरं.” तिचे हात पकडून गौरी.
“म्हणजे मला माफी मिळाली?” तिने पटकन विचारले. किती ती निरागसता.
“नाही. त्यासाठी तुला हे घ्यावे लागेल.” पुस्तकाच्या कपाटातील बाराखडीचे रंगीत पुस्तक तिच्या हातात ठेवत गौरी उत्तरली.
“हे आणिक कशाला? मला वाचता येत नाय.” तिचा परत नन्नाचा पाढा.
“वाचू नको. तिथले चित्र तर बघशील? हो ना दादा?” एक नजर प्रकाशकडे टाकून गौरी चित्राला म्हणाली.
“हो तर. तुला वाचायला कोण सांगतय?” शरदसोबत खाली खेळत बसलेल्या त्याने किंचित मान वर करून विचारले.
गौरीचा राग घालवायचा म्हणून असेल किंवा प्रकाश म्हणाला म्हणून. तिने ते पुस्तक पटकन हातात घेतले.
“एऽऽय! दादा हिने पुस्तक घेतले. रत्ना तू ना माझी खरंच मैत्रीण आहेस.” गौरीने तिला मिठी मारली आणि रत्नाचे डोळे पाणावले.
“गौरी.. मी खरंच तुझी मैत्रीण आहे?”
“हो अगं.”
“म्हणजे मी अशी गरीब आन तुम्ही एवढे पैसेवाले.. तरीही आपण मैत्रिणी?”
“वेडे मैत्रीत गरीब श्रीमंत असा भेद कधीच नसतो. हे नातच तसं आहे. या नात्यात ना पैश्यांचा भेद असतो ना वयाचा, ना लिंगाचा आणि ना धर्माचा. कळलं?” शरद जवळून उठून तिच्या डोक्यावर किंचित टपली मारत प्रकाश म्हणाला.
त्याचे प्रत्येक शब्द तिला कळण्यासारखे नव्हते; पण त्या दोघींच्या मैत्रीत पैश्यांचा संबंध नसणार हे तिला समजले होते. गौरीकडे बघून तिने एक गोड स्मित केले.
“माझी पण मैत्रीण होशील?” तिच्या ओठावरचे ते गोड हसू मनात जपून ठेवताना प्रकाशने तिच्यासमोर हात केला.
“तुझ्याशी मैत्री? नको बाबा.” नाजूक ओठासह तिचे टपोरे डोळे हलले.
“का?”
“का म्हंजी? पोरीपोरींची मैत्री ठिक आहे पण असं पोरासंग कशी मैत्री करायची?”
“अगं त्यानं काय होतं? आताच तर दादाने सांगितलं ना की मैत्रीत लिंगाचा संबंध नसतो म्हणून? अगं मैत्री कुणासोबतही होऊ शकते.” गौरी समजावून सांगत होती आणि रत्ना खूप गहण विचारात गुंतल्यासारखी हनुवटीवर बोट ठेवून तिच्याकडे पाहत होती.
“आलं का ध्यानात?” गौरीने तिचे बोट ओढले तसे तिने डोके हलवले आणि प्रकाशचा हात हातात घेतला.
“गौरीबरोबर मी आता तुझी बी मैत्रीण झाल्ये.” स्वच्छ हसत तिने प्रकाशकडे पाहिले. तिच्या शुभ्र दंतकळ्यांनी त्या हास्याला अधिकच मोहकता लाभली होती.
तिचे नितळ हसू बघून प्रकाश आणि गौरीचे ओठ आपसूकच हलले.
नव्या नात्याची ही सुरुवात त्यांना कुठे घेऊन जाणार होती हे येणारा काळ ठरवणार होता. सध्याच्या घडीला मात्र या तिघांची तिकडी जाम खुश होती आणि त्या खुशीत आणखी दोन चिमुकले डोळे सहभागी झाले होते.. ते म्हणजे शरदचे.
