भाग -१०
शीलाआँटी गेली. चंपा तशीच ताटाजवळ बसून होती. खायची इच्छा नव्हतीच. हात जोडून ताट बाजूला सारणार तेव्हा तिला पुन्हा श्रावणातील ती रात्र आठवली. लहान भावाच्या भुकेसाठी इंदूताईंपुढे तिने जोडलेले हात.. त्यांनी दिलेल्या गरम भाकरी आणि ती खाऊन सगळ्यांचे फुललेले चेहरे.
बाबा, शरद आणि आई..
पुन्हा एकदा आईची आठवण! पुन्हा एकदा सगळ्या आठवणींचे रिंगण..! ती शिरपाची झोपडी आणि पहिल्यांदा ओलांडलेले वाड्याचे कुंपण.

“बाबा, तुम्ही पहिल्याच भेटीत आईला चक्क शाळेबद्दल विचारलंत?” भूतकाळातील रमलेल्या प्रकाशला मनस्वी डोळे मोठे कररून विचारत होती.
“आई?” प्रकाशने भुवया वर केल्या.
“मग काय म्हणू? तुमच्या प्रेमाला नावानं कसं बोलू? ते खूप ऑड वाटतं.”
“अगं पण आमचं लग्न कुठे झालं होतं?”
“सगळं नीट असतं तर झालंही असतं ना? आणि आताही काही वेळ गेली नाही की. चंपाजी फार सुंदर आहेत; पण तुम्हीही काही कमी नाहीत म्हटलं. यू आर स्टील लूकिंग हॅन्डसम. हां, एकदोन चंदेरी केस डोकावतात खरे, बट इट्स ओके. तेवढं मॅनेज होऊन जाईल.”
“वेडी आहेस तू. आमचं लग्न होणं शक्य नाही.”
“का? समाजात तुमचा एक वेगळाच ऑरा आहे म्हणून? तुमच्या नावापुढे त्यांचं नाव झाकोळल्या जाईल म्हणून की त्यांच्यामुळे तुमचं नाव बदनाम होईल म्हणून? कसली भीती आहे बाबा तुम्हाला?” काहीशा ठाम स्वरात ती म्हणाली.
“लहान आहेस मनू तू. या गोष्टी तुला नाही कळणार.”
“बाबा, आय एम ट्वेंटी सेव्हन इयर्स ओल्ड आणि तरीही तुम्ही मला लहानच समजता? अहो,एखाद्या साध्या घरात जन्माला येऊन इतकं न शिकता लग्न केलं असतं तर आज दोन मुलांची आई असते मी आणि जर तुमचा हात पकडून इथे आले नसते तर कदाचित शालिमार गल्लीतील कोठीप्रमाणे एखाद्या तत्सम कोठीवरची दुसरी चंपाबाई असते.” तिचा स्वर कापरा झाला.
“मनू, काहीतरीच काय बोलतेस?” तिच्या ओठावर बोट ठेवत तिला रोखत तो म्हणाला.
“बाबा, एका बदनाम गल्लीतील मुलीला स्वतःची मुलगी म्हणवून घेऊ शकता, मग त्यांना त्या ठिकाणाहून का नाही घेऊन आलात? तुम्ही, मी आणि त्या.. आपली कुटुंबाची ही फ्रेम पूर्ण झाली असती ना हो?” ती हळवी झाली तसे त्याने तिला प्रेमाने गोंजारले.
“तिला शेवटचं भेटलो तेव्हा विनवणी, अर्जव सारं काही करून झालं; पण ती तिच्या नकारावर ठाम होती. माझ्या रत्नाला तिने स्वतःमधून पूर्णपणे बाहेर काढून फेकले होते. मी तर तिला चंपा म्हणूनही स्वीकारायला तयार होतो; पण तिने मला धूडकावून लावले. म्हणाली, चंपा केवळ एखाद्या पुरुषाची शय्यासोबत करू शकते. आयुष्यभराची सोबत नाही.
काय बोलणार होतो मी यावर? कुठल्या हक्काने तिच्यावर जबरदस्ती करणार होतो?” भरलेल्या डोळ्यांनी त्याचा प्रश्न.
“आय एम सॉरी बाबा. मला तुम्हाला हर्ट करायचे नव्हते.” त्याच्या डोळ्यात पाणी आले तसे तिला गलबलून आले.
“मनू, प्रेमाचं नातं विश्वासावर अवलंबून असतं गं. तिचा तर माझ्यावरचा विश्वासच उडाला होता. मग कुठलं प्रेम नि कुठलं काय?”
“पण माझा पूर्ण विश्वास आहे तुमच्यावर, तुमच्या प्रेमावर आणि बघाल एक दिवस तुमचं प्रेम नक्की जिंकेल. त्या चंपाजी तुमच्या आयुष्यात रत्ना म्हणून परत प्रवेशतील.”
“थँक्स. असं आशावादी असावं माणसानं.” त्याने तिच्या डोक्यावर टपली मारली.
“तुला ठाऊक आहे, रत्नाही अशीच होती गं.”
“हो? आणखी कशी होती तुमची रत्ना?” तिने त्याच्या डोळ्यात पाहत विचारले तसे तो मंद हसला.
“हुशार. खूप हुशार. चिकाटीची. एखादी गोष्ट मिळवायचा ध्यास घेतला तर दिवसाचा रात्र करणारी. पुस्तकं तर अगदी अधाशासारखी वाचून काढायची.. तुझ्यासारखीच.”
“पण त्या तर शाळेत जात नव्हत्या ना? मग वाचायला कुठे शिकल्या?”
“अरे, शाळेत कशी जाणार नव्हती? कितीही नाही म्हटलं तरी मी होतोच की. सारखा तिच्यामागे मी धोशा लावू लागलो. मग काय? झाली ती तयार.”
“लगेच?”
“अगदी लगेच नाही; पण झाली तयार. नेहमीचे परकर पोलके सोडून फ्रॉक घालायला लागलेली रत्ना पुस्तकं घेऊन बसायची ना तेव्हा फार गोड दिसायची.”
भिंतीला डोके टेकून त्याने डोळे मिटून घेतले. मिटल्या डोळ्यांपुढे लहानग्या रत्नाची छबी पिंगा घालत होती. रत्ना.. फ्रॉकमधली नव्हे तर तीच पहिल्या भेटीत घातलेल्या तिच्या काळ्या परकर पोलक्यातील.

“नाव काय म्हणालास?”
“जी, मी गोविंदा आन् ही माझी बायको, वच्छी.” आबासाहेबांच्या चावडीवर समोर बसलेला गोविंदा स्वतःची ओळख करून देत होता.
“वच्छी?” आबांनी तिच्याकडे एक नजर टाकून पुन्हा गोविंदाकडे पाहिले.
“म्हणजे खरं नाव वच्छला.”
बरं, बरं काय काम करतोस?”
“कसलं काम मालक? उलट त्याच्याच शोधात आम्ही इथवर आलोय. साधा जमिनीचा तुकडा नाही की रहायला घर नाही. आज्याचं होतं सगळं; पण ते चुलत्यानं खोट्या सह्या घेऊन स्वतःच सगळं लाटलं आणि आम्हाला अशी दारोदार फिरण्याची पाळी आली.” गोविंदा त्याची आपबीती सांगत होता.
“इथं माझ्याकडे काम करशील?” आबांच्या प्रश्नावर अण्णाने चमकून पाहिले.
“व्हय जी.” गोविंदा एका पायावर उभा होता.
“अरे लेका आधी काम तर समजून घे. तुला जमेल की नाही काही न बघताच होकार दिलास?”
“मालक, काल रातच्याला तुम्ही आम्हाला आसरा दिला, पोटाला भाकरी दिली. तुमचे हे ऋण फिटण्यासारखे नाही बघा. तेव्हा आता जे काम म्हणाल ते करायला तयार आहे.
तुम्ही वाड्याची झाडलोट कर म्हणा, गुराढोरांची सेवा, अंगण सारवणं, शेण काढणं.. सारंच करेन जी. तुम्ही फक्त बोला.”
“आबासाहेब, आपल्याकडे या सगळ्या कामासाठी आधीच माणसं आहेत की. मग पुन्हा याची भर कशाला?”आबा काही बोलण्यापूर्वी अण्णा म्हणाले.
“हो आहेतच. तसेही त्याला हे काम देणार नाहीये मी.”
“अहो, पण मग काय काम देणार आहात? घरात शेतात सगळीकडे माणसांचा राबता आहे. याची पुन्हा कुठे भर घालणार आहात?”
“अण्णा, गावचा पाटील आहे मी. असं कोणी माझ्यापुढे हात पसरेल तर त्याला मदत न करता कसा राहीन?”
“आबा, अहो..”
“अण्णा, तुम्ही काळजी करू नका. गोविंदा शेतात राहील. तिथल्या गुराढोरांची काळजी घेईल आणि रात्रीला रानटी जनवरापासून पिकांचे रक्षण करेल. काय रे गोविंदा जमेल ना तुला?”
“व्हय जी मालक. तुमचे खूप उपकार होतील.” गोविंदाने हात जोडले.
“अरे, बस बस. शिरपा, याला बांधावर घेऊन जा. रंगा राहत होता त्या घरात राहायची व्यवस्था करा. पाटलीणबाई, काही दिवसांसाठी यांच्या अन्नधान्याची सोय करा. निघा आता.”
आबांनी उठून आपला शेला सावरला. चावडी संपली याचा तो इशारा हप्ता. शिरपा गोविंदाला घेऊन बाहेर आला पाठोपाठ वच्छीही आली.
“अण्णा, गोरगरिबांना मदत करायचा आपला धर्म असतो. मी गावचा पाटील आणि तुम्ही सरपंच. हे गाव आपले आहे. तिथल्या लोकांची आपणच काळजी घ्यायची ना? आसरा मागणाऱ्याला तो द्यायचा असतो हे ध्यानात ठेवा अण्णा.
तसा गोविंदा माणूस म्हणून बरा आहे, स्वभावानेही गरीब वाटला. झाली तर आपल्याला त्याची मदतच होईल.” आबा म्हणाले त्यावर अण्णांनी मान डोलावली. त्यांन त्यांचे म्हणणे पटले होते.

“नाकी डोळी सुंदर आहेस गं. नाव काय तुझं? धान्य घ्यायला आलेल्या वच्छलाला वत्सलाबाई विचारत होत्या.
वच्छला होतीच तशी. सुंदर. छोट्याश्या चेहऱ्याची, त्यावरचे काळे डोळे, गोरी पण कष्टानं जराशी काळवंडलेली.
“वच्छला.. पर समदी वच्छीच म्हणत्यात.” खाली पाहत वच्छलाने उत्तर दिले. तिचा बारीक आवाज ऐकायला गोड वाटत होता.
“बरं, वच्छी एवढं धान्य तू उचलशील ना? की शिरपाला धाडू.”
“उचलन जी. आयुष्याचं ओझं वाहतोय की मग हे धान्य उचलून होणार नाही का?” ती उत्तरली.
“अगं तसं नाही. तुझ्या पोटात बाळ आहे ना? म्हणून म्हणाले.” वत्सलाबाई हळू आवाजात म्हणाल्या तसे वच्छीने पोटावरून पटकन पदर ओढून घेतला.
“कळलं तुमास्नी?” तिच्या डोळ्यात भीतीवजा आश्चर्य होते.
“हो, कळलं की. ही काय लपून राहण्यासारखी गोष्ट थोडीच आहे?” वत्सलाबाई हसल्या.
“पर मी रत्नीच्या बापासून लपवून ठेवलंय. त्यांना पुन्हा लेकरू नको होतं.”
“का गं?” पाटलीणबाईंच्या चेहऱ्यावर उत्सुकता दाटली.
“रत्नीच्या पाटचा झालेला शऱ्या अंगान लै किरकोळ आहे. तो जन्मला तेव्हा डाक्टरने तर हात झटकले होते.
तिला त्याची साथ लाभेल का नाही ठाऊक नाही म्हणून दुसरं लेकरू मला हवं आहे. माझी रत्नी एकटी नको ना पडायला? आम्ही असू नसू पण तिला माहेर तर असंल?” तिच्या डोळ्यात पाणी होते.
“बराच पुढचा विचार केलास की गं तू. तुझ्या मनासारखं होऊ दे गं बाई.” वत्सलाबाईंनी तोंडभरून आशीर्वाद दिला तसे तिच्या करूण चेहऱ्यावर एक हसू उमटले.
“येते बाई मी.” टोपली डोक्यावर घेत ती जायला निघाली.
“आईऽऽ”
वच्छी वळली अन् त्याचवेळी एक मधुर आवाज कानावर आला.
“रत्ने?” तिला असे दारात बघून वच्छीने आश्चर्याने तोंडावर हात ठेवला.
रत्ना तिच्याकडे हसून बघत होती.
रत्ना.. कालपर्यंत परकर पोलकं घालणारी आणि आता फ्रॉक घालून मिरवत होती.
