चार कुटुंब पिकनीकसाठी गोव्याला चालले होते. त्या चार कुटुंबात दोन-दोन मुल होती. त्यामुळे त्यांनी वीस सीटर असलेला टेम्पो ट्रॅव्हलर बुक केलेला होता. चांगले तिन ते चार दिवसांचा कार्यक्रम ठरवलेला होता. गोव्याला जाता जाता रस्त्यात येणारी इतर पर्यटन स्थळांना भेट देत-देत ते पुढे जाणार होते.
गाडीवाल्याला दिलेल्या वेळेत चारही कुटुंब तयार होऊन बसली होती. आज त्यांना अलिबाग, मुरुड जंजिरा हे किल्ले बघुन संध्याकाळपर्यंत रत्नागिरीला पोहोचायचं होत. सकाळी पाच वाजता गाडी येणार होती. सगळेच खुपच उत्साहात होते. पाच चे साडेपाच वाचुन गेले होते. गाडी काही आली नव्हती. मग ज्या टुर्स वाल्याकडुन बुक केली होती त्याला फोन लावला. त्याने सांगीतलं की तासाभरात गाडी येईलच. आता तासभर वेळ आहे म्हणुन सगळ्यांनी नाश्ता करुन घेण्याच ठरवलेलं होत. नाश्ता करता करता दोन तास अजुन गेला होता. तरीही त्यांची गाडी काही अजुन आली नव्हती.मग परत त्या टुर्सवाल्याला फोन लावला होता. ह्यावेळेस गाडी विचारण्याची उत्साह थोडा मावळलेला होता. यावेळेस ही त्या टुर्सवाल्याने अर्ध्या तासाने गाडी येईल अस सांगीतलं होत. अर्धा तास करता करता अजुन एक तास गेला होता. तरी गाडीचा काही पत्ता नव्हता. आता मात्र सगळे चांगलेच चिडले होते. टुर्सवाल्याला फोन लावुन थोड्या वरच्या आवाजातच गाडी पाठवणार आहात का नाही? असं विचारलं होत. तेव्हाही त्याने अर्धा तासाचा वेळ मागुन घेतला होता. आता तर सगळ्यांनी ठरवलचं होत. जर अर्ध्या तासात गाडी आली नाही तर गाडीच कॅन्सल करायची.नाही नाही म्हणता अजुन तासाभरानंतर गाडी येऊन पोहोचली होती. तोपर्यंत सगळ्यांनीच त्यांनी केलेली तयारी सोडुन पसरुन घेतलेल होत. गाडी आल्यानंतर सगळ्यांनी मिळून त्या टुर्सवाल्याला जे फैलावर घेतल. त्यात त्या गाडीचा ड्रायव्हरला पण शिव्या पडलेल्या होत्या. ड्रायव्हर काहीतरी बोलण्याचा प्रयत्न करत होता. पण त्याला कोणी बोलुच देत नव्हतं. शेवटी तो ही रागातच ओरडुन बोलला होता. ऐन वेळेला गाडीच्या ब्रेकला प्रोब्लेम झाल्याने, एवढ्या सकाळीच गॅरेजवाल्याला उठवुन त्याच्याकडुन ते काम पुर्ण करुन मगच तो आलेला होता.
ड्रायव्हरने केलेल्या खुलाशाने सगळेच शांत बसले होते. पण त्या टुर्सवाल्याने माहीती असुनही काहीच सांगतील नाही म्हणून त्याला परत शिव्या पडल्या होत्या. सगळं काही आवरुन निघता निघता चांगलेच साडेनऊ वाजलेले होते. आता निघायलाच उशीर झाल्याने त्यांच्या प्लॅनमधुन अलिबागला राम-राम मिळाला होता. तेवढे पैसेही त्या कुटुंबाने टुर्सवाल्यासोबत ठरवलेल्या पैशातून कट करुन घेतलेले होते.
पिकनीकची सुरवात झाल्याने सगळ्यांचा खराब झालेला मुड आता चांगला झाला होता. सगळेच मस्तीच्या मूडमध्ये आलेले होते. गप्पा, गाणी, अंताक्षरी यामध्ये सगळेच व्यस्त होते. दुपारचे एक वाजुन गेल्यानंतर सगळ्यांनाच भुक लागलेली होती. मग त्यांनी ड्रायव्हरला एखाद हॉटेल बघुन गाडी थांबवायला सांगितलेली होती. ड्रायव्हरने एकही शब्द न बोलता त्याला माहीती असलेल्या एका चांगल्या हॉटेलवर गाडी लावली होती. त्याच्या अबोलाकडे दुर्लक्ष करत सगळेच जेवायला हॉटेलमधे गेले होते. हॉटेलमध्ये जाताना महीलामंडळींनी ड्रायवरला ही यायला सांगायला विसरले नाहीत.
जेवण झाल्याने ते सगळेच मुरुड जंजीरा किल्याजवळ पोहोचले होते. तिथे गाडीतुन उतरुन सगळेच छोट्याश्या होडीने किल्यावर गेले होते. त्या कुटुंबातील मोठ्या पुरुषमंडळींनी तो किल्या आधीच पाहीलेला होता. बाकीच्यांसाठी मात्र हा पहीलाच अनुभव होता. चांगला तासभर सगळाच किल्ला त्यांनी पिंजून काढला होता. किल्याची माहीती सांगताना त्या पुरुषांमंडळीची छाती अभिमानाने फुलली होती आणि बाकी सगळेच ती सगळी माहीती भारावून ऐकत होते. शेवटी होडी होडीवाल्याने आवाज दिल्यावर सगळेच भानावर आलेले होते. मग ज्या होडीने आले होते. त्याच होडीने ते परत किनार्‍यावर आले होते.तिथुन निघुन ते सगळेच रत्नागिरीच्या दिशेने निघाले होते. पल्ला जरा लांबचा होता. म्हणून ड्रायव्हर ही गाडी जरा वेगाने काढत होता. मध्ये छोटासा चहाचा ब्रेक घेऊन ते पुढच्या प्रवासाला लागले होते. रत्नागीरीत त्यांनी हॉटेल बुक केलेली होती. पण जेवणासाठी मात्र त्यांच्या एका नातेवाईकाकडे जाणार होते. रत्नागिरीत पोहोचता पोहोचता त्यांना रात्रीचे नऊ वाजले होते. मग त्यांनी हॉटेलवर जाऊन पटकन चेक इन करुन सामान तिथे ठेवलं आणि तिथुन निघुन त्यांच्या नातेवाईकाकडे गेले होते.
आता बऱ्याच दिवसानंतर आपल्या गावाकडचे पाहुणे येणार म्हटल्यावर कोणालाही आनंद होतोच. मग काय? त्या नातेवाईकाने पाहुणे येणार म्हणून नॉनव्हेज जेवणाची जय्यत तयारी केलेली होती. माश्यांचे तिन चार प्रकार बनवलेले होते. जे फक्त व्हेज खाणार होते. त्यांच्यासाठी पनीरची भाजी होती.त्या कुटुंबातील दोन माणस दारु पिणारी होती. तो नातेवाईक ही प्रसंगानुरूप घेणारा होताच. मग त्या तिघांची पण चांगलीच पार्टी रंगली होती. पुर्ण दिवस सोबत असल्याने ड्रायव्हर सोबतही चांगलीच गट्टी झालेली होती. मग एक दोन ग्लास त्यानेही रिचवले होते. आजची रात्र ते मुक्काम थांबणार होते. म्हणून ड्रायव्हरने थोडीफार घेतलेली होती. नाहीतर तो पहीले तर नकारच देत होता.जेवण सगळ्यांनाच आवडलेल होत. तो नातेवाईक आणि ही दोघ माणस या तिघांना दारु चांगलीच चढलेली होती. ड्रायव्हरने दोन ग्लासच घेतली असल्याने तो मात्र शुध्दीत होता. परत हॉटेलकडे निघताना ज्या दोन जणांनी दारु घेतली नव्हती. ते ड्रायव्हर जवळ जाऊन बोलले. “हॉटेलचा रस्ता आम्हाला माहीती आहे आणि आम्ही शुध्दीत आहोत. मग रस्ता पण आम्हीच सांगतो.”
यावेळेस ही ड्रायव्हर काही बोलणार तोच ती दोन माणस ड्रायव्हरला बोलुच देत नव्हते. मग सध्या ड्रायव्हर ही काहीच बोलला नव्हता. नातेवाईकाकडे येताना त्यांना फक्त वीस मिनीट लागली होती. पण आता अर्धा तास झाला तरी त्यांच हॉटेल यायचं नाव घेत नव्हतं. आता ती दोघेजण चांगलीच गोंधळली होती. कारण ते ज्या रस्त्याने आले होते. तो रस्ता हा नव्हताच. त्यांना गोंधळलेल बघुन मग ड्रायव्हर बोलला.“तुम्ही तर शुध्दीत होते ना?” ड्रायव्हर “मग आता तुम्ही शांत बसा.” ड्रायव्हरलाही अगदी थोडीच चढलेली असल्याने तो त्याच तोऱ्यात बोलला होता. त्या रस्त्यावरुन ड्रायव्हरने गाडी परत फिरवली. तिथुन परत येताना त्यांना जाणवलं की नातेवाईकांकडून निघाल्यावर मुख्य रस्तावर येताच त्यांना डाव्या हाताला वळायचं होत. पण त्या दोन शुध्दीत असलेल्या माणसांनी त्यांना उजव्या हाताकडे घेऊन गेले होते.एवढं सगळं झाल्यावर ज्या दोन माणसांनी दारु घेतली होती. ते मध्येच बोलले. “अरे! हा. इथुन तर जायचं होत.”तसे सगळेच या दोघांकडे बघु लागले होते. मग ते त्यांच्या हॉटेलवर पोहोचले होते. हॉटेलवर पोहोचल्यावर ड्रायव्हर परत बोलला होता.“आता सांगा शुध्दीत कोण होत?” ड्रायव्हर हसत बोलला.यानंतर हास्याचा स्फोटच झालेला होता. दुसर्‍या दिवसापासुन पुर्ण पिकनीक होईपर्यंत त्या कुटुंबाच्या मुलांनी “आम्ही शुध्दीत होतो.” हा डायलॉग फेमस केलेला होता.काय मग? तुम्हीपण कधी असा अनुभव घेतला होता का?
