हे ऐकून क्रांतीच्या आई वडिलांच्या डोळ्यात पाणी आलं..या माणसांची श्रीमंती बघून ती नतमस्तक झाली.

दोघांचं लग्न झालं. कार्तिक तिला तो राहत असलेल्या खोलीवर घेऊन आला. एकच खोली, त्यात एक अंथरुन, बाजूला शेगडी, स्वयंपाकाची भांडी आणि ढीगभर पुस्तकं. कार्तिक तिला म्हणाला,

“तात्पुरता इथे राहू, नंतर बघूया चांगली खोली..”

ती हसली, आणि संसार सुरू झाला.

तो सकाळी पेपर टाकायला जायचा. आणि दिवसभर लायब्ररीत.. त्याचं शिक्षण सुरू होतं. क्रांती शिकलेली होती, तिनेही काम सुरू केलं आणि हाताशी पैसा येऊ लागला.

सहवासाने प्रेम फुलतं तसंच त्यांच्यात झालं. खूप आनंदात दोघेही राहू लागले. कार्तिक पेपर टाकणारा असला तरी दिसायला देखणा होता, बोलण्यात नम्रता होती आणि अधूनमधून त्याच्या हुशारीची चुणूकही तिला दिसे. त्याला सगळंच माहीत असायचं, आजूबाजूला काय घडतंय, राजकारणात काऊ चाललंय, क्रिकेट चं काय सुरू आहे, एवढंच नाही तर मोबाईल, लॅपटॉप सारख्या गॅजेट्सला सुद्धा तो लीलया चालवे. त्याचं हे रूप बघून क्रांती अजूनच त्याच्या प्रेमात पडे.

एकदा तिच्या मावसबहिणीचं लग्न ठरलं असं तिला कळलं. आपल्याला आमंत्रण येईल असं तिला वाटलं. पण तिच्या आई वडिलांनी तिच्या मावसबहिणीला क्रांतीकडे जाण्यास मनाई केलेली. लग्न एका मोठ्या घरात आहे, तिथे आमचा जावई काय म्हणून मिरवू? आमचा जावई पेपर टाकायला जातो असं?? वडिलांना त्याची लाज वाटायची, म्हणूनच त्यांनी मावसबहिणीला स्पष्ट सांगितलेलं.

क्रांतीला याचं खूप वाईट वाटलं. रागही आला. माझ्या नवऱ्याची मला लाज वाटत नाही तर यांना का वाटावी??

त्या दिवशी कार्तिक सकाळी सकाळी पेपर टाकायला निघाला, एक पेपर त्याने क्रांती पुढे ठेवला आणि म्हणाला,

“अगं पेपर वाचत जा कधीतरी..”

“आज काय हे नवीनच?”

“नवीन कसलं, पेपरवाल्याची बायको पेपरच वाचत नाही…कसं वाटतं ते??”

सकाळी सकाळी घरात हशा पिकला. तो जाता जाता म्हणाला,

“आज पेपर टाकायचा शेवटचा दिवस, उद्यापासून दुसरं काम घेणारे..”

“अहो कसलं??”

“आल्यावर सांगतो, आणि संध्याकाळी एका मित्राच्या लग्नाला जायचं आहे, तयार रहा..”

तो घाईघाईने निघून गेला.पेपर टाकून घरी आला आणि परत दुसऱ्या कामासाठी बाहेर गेला, क्रांती सुद्धा घरी नव्हती, ऑफिसला गेलेली.  संध्याकाळी दोघांची घरी भेट झाली.

“क्रांती आवर गं..” असं म्हणत त्याने सकाळी तिच्यापुढे ठेवलेल्या पेपरकडे पाहिलं..तो तसाच होता, तिने वाचलाच नव्हता…
