तिच्या याच हुषारीमुळे तिला तिच्या काकांनी एक तोलामोलाचं स्थळ आणलेलं, तिचा नवरा बँकेत एक मोठा अधिकारी होता, घर अतिश्रीमंत. भरपूर प्रॉपर्टी. पण हळूहळू तिला समजत गेलं की श्रीमंती आणि सुशिक्षितपणा यात बरीच तफावत घरी आहे.
तिला याने फरक पडणार नव्हता, तिने तिच्या एका संशोधनात स्वतःला झोकुन दिलेलं. घरातलं बघून ती तिचं काम प्रामाणिकपणे करत असे.
सासूबाईंना घरात दिवसभर काही काम नसे, सर्व कामाला बायका असत, जुजबी कामं जसं आवराआवर, स्वयंपाक आणि साफसफाई तेवढं ते करत. सासुबाई आजारी होत्या तेव्हा नेमक्या 2 बायका रजेवर होत्या. तिने कसलीही तक्रार न करता सगळं केलेलं.
एके दिवशी घरी पाहुणे आले,
सासूबाईंच्या माहेरचे, सासूबाईंनी भाची,
तिने पाहुण्यांचं स्वागत केलं, त्यांच्यासाठी खास जेवण बनवलं, गप्पागोष्टी केल्या,
घर दाखवायला म्हणून भाचीला घरातल्या सर्व खोल्या दाखवल्या,
तिच्या खोलीत तिचा वॉर्डरोब उघडा होता, तिथून काही साड्या दिसत होत्या,
भाची म्हणाली, “अय्या किती सुंदर साड्या आहेत..”
तिने भाचीला एकेक साडी दाखवली,
सगळा पाहुणचार झाला अन ते घरी गेले,
ते गेल्यानंतर सासुबाई फुगून बसल्या,
“आता काय झालं?” नवऱ्याने विचारलं,
“तुझ्या बायकोला कळायला हवं”
“काय?”
“माझी भाची, गरीब बिचारी.. तिला कधी चांगल्या साड्या मिळाल्या नाहीत, तुझ्या बायकोने म्हटलं असतं की घे यातून चार पाच तुला तर काय बिघडलं असतं?”
“अगं मग तू द्यायच्या की तुझ्या..”
तो असं म्हणाला तश्या सासुबाई शांत झाल्या, त्यांच्याकडे उत्तर नव्हतं,
ती हे सगळं ऐकत होती, हसू येत होतं तिला.
एके दिवशी पुन्हा तो आईचं काहीतरी ऐकून आला आणि तिला बोलू लागला..त्यावेळी मात्र तिचा संयम सुटला,
