तिथून आल्यावर मी त्यांचे कपडे पाहिले, सगळे कपडे प्रिया मधूनच आणलेले..मी म्हणाले,

“अहो ताई मी तुम्हाला म्हटलं होतं ना..”

“असुदेत गं… तिला आवडले असतील..”

मी नाराज झाले, पण म्हटलं छोटीशी गोष्ट आहे, एवढं मनाला का लावून घ्यायचं..

त्या दिवशी रात्री मी पाणी घ्यायला किचनमध्ये आले, उशीर झालेला, सर्वजण झोपले होते म्हणून मी आवाज न करता सावकाश गेले, आईच्या खोलीतून आवाज येत होता, ताई आणि सासूबाई गप्पा मारत होत्या तर त्यांचं बोलणं माझ्या कानावर पडलं,

“आली मोठी खरेदीला येते म्हणे, तिला वाटलं असेल की आपल्या नवऱ्याला भुर्दंड बसेल, बरोबर खेळी खेळायला चाललेली..बरं वेळेवर तिचा डाव माझ्या लक्षात आला म्हणून…आपल्या नवऱ्यावर हक्क गाजवायला बघते ती, तिला म्हणा तिचा नवरा नंतर, तो आधी माझा मुलगा आणि तुझा भाऊ आहे..आणि काय म्हणे? प्रिया मधून कपडे घेऊ नका म्हणून? आम्हाला काही कळत नाही होय? तिथे महागडे कपडे असतात ना म्हणून तिचा आटापिटा चाललेला, नवऱ्याला भुर्दंड बसू नये म्हणून..आली मोठी शहाणी..”

हे ऐकून वृंदाच्या पायाखालची जमीनच सरकली, ती शांतपणे तिच्या खोलीत गेली आणि विचार करू लागली.

“हे असले विचार माझ्या मनाच्या सातव्या पडद्यातही आले नाहीत, आणि या दोघी परस्पर ठरवून टाकताय की मी खेळी खेळते…किती भयानक आहे हे..”

आईला हे ऐकून धक्का बसला, मुलीला आता काय सांगावं तिला कळेना..तरी आई म्हणाली,

“हे बघ बाळा, प्रत्येक घरात हे होत असतं.. पण एक ना एक दिवस आपला शुद्ध हेतू त्यांच्या लक्षात येतोच…वेळ लागतो पण त्यांना जाणीव होतेच..”

“हो? मला सांग, तू आत्यासाठी इतके दिवस सगळं करतेय, तुझ्याबद्दल त्यांचं मत चांगलं आहे का??”

“असणारच…म्हणजे, असेल..माहीत नाही..”

“बरं जाऊदे ते, उद्या तू लग्नाला जाणारेस ना? सकाळी लवकर निघावं लागेल बाबांना आणि तुला..”

“हो गं, सकाळी लवकर उठावं लागेल..स्वयंपाक करूनच जाते”

“कशाला? मी आणि आत्या आहोत ना..आम्ही करून घेऊ..”

उद्या स्वयंपाक करायचा म्हणून काही भाजीपाला आणायचा का हे आत्याला विचारू म्हणून ती आजीच्या खोलीत गेली, तिथे आजी आणि आत्या गप्पा मारत बसलेल्या,

“तू उद्या दिवसभर तुझ्या मैत्रिणीकडे निघून जा..वृंदाच्या आईला पण लग्नाला उद्याच जायचं होतं, तिला वाटलं असेल घरातलं तू बघून घेशील…तू पण चांगली जिरव तिची…”

वृंदाने दाराअडून सगळं ऐकलं, मागे पाहिलं तर आईही हे सगळं ऐकत होती, आईच्या डोळ्यात पाणी आलं..कित्येक वर्षे सास, सासरे, नणंद यांचं करण्यात आयुष्य घालवलं.. पण आज इतक्या वर्षांनी सुद्धा त्यांचं वहिनीबद्दल मत तसंच होतं…

वृंदाने आईच्या डोळ्यात पाहिलं, इतकी वर्षे घरातल्या माणसांसाठी घेतलेली मेहनत अशी धुळीस जाताना दिसत होती,

यावेळी तिनेच आईला समजावलं,

“आई आयुष्य निघून जातं सर्वांचं करण्यात, आपण चांगल्या उद्देशाने सर्वांसाठी करायला जातो आणि ती लोकं आपल्या शुद्ध हेतूला राजकारण समजतात, अश्यावेळी आपण हात आवरणंच योग्य. लोकांचं आपल्याबद्दल मत काय असावं हे आपल्या हातात नाही, पण आपण स्वतःला वेळ देणं, स्वतःला आनंदी ठेवणं आणि आपला वेळ जाणीव असणाऱ्या माणसांसाठी व्यतीत करणं हेच योग्य…”
