मागील भागात आपण पाहिले की सुगंधा आणि सुभानराव दर्शनाला जातात आणि त्याचवेळी शत्रू सैनिक हल्ला करतात. सुभानराव जखमी झालेल्या अवस्थेत सुगंधा गुप्त मार्गाने सर्वांना बाहेर काढते. सुभानरावांचे शरीर थंड पडत चालले होते. आता पाहूया पुढे.

“सुगंधा,तातडीने त्यांच्या शरीराला ऊब द्यावी लागेल.”
केशर गोळीच्या जखमेवर औषधी लेप लावत सांगत होती.

सुगंधाने उत्तर दिले.

“केशर,इथे आपण दुसरी व्यवस्था करू शकत नाही. तू बाहेर जा.” सुगंधाने निर्णय घेतला होता.

सकाळी सुभानराव जागे झाले तेव्हा ते विवस्त्र होते आणि त्यांच्या छातीवर डोके ठेवून सुगंधा झोपली होती. त्यांची थोडीशी हालचाल होताच सुगंधा जागी झाली. ती पटकन दूर गेली आणि अंगावर शाल पांघरली.

“सुगंधा,तुझ्या देहाचा मोह असता तर तो मिळवायचे अनेक मार्ग अनुसरले असते. तू मला विचारले होते की मला पत्नीचे स्थान द्याल का? आज मला जीवदान देऊन तू ते स्थान मिळवले आहेस. आता तुझी मर्जी ते स्वीकारायचे की नाही.”

सुभानराव थांबले.

“आपल्याला आधी इथून सुरक्षित निघावे लागेल. मग मी तुमच्या प्रस्तावाचे उत्तर देईल.”

सुगंधा तयार होऊन बाहेर निघून गेली.

खंडोजी आता पूर्ण सावरला होता. इनामदार बाहेर येताच त्याने इथून कसे बाहेर पडायचे याची योजना सांगितली.

केशर सापडलेले शिल्प सुरक्षित आहे का? हे पाहून आली होती. ह्या सगळ्या गडबडीत कैद केलेली ती चेटकीण पळून गेली होती.

“मालक,चेटकीण पळाली.” खंडोजीने आठवण करून दिली.

“अरे जाऊ दे. आधी आपल्याला साजगाव गाठायला हवे.” इनामदार म्हणाले.

सगळेजण शक्य तितक्या वेगाने पुढे चालू लागले. कुठेही न थांबता प्रवास चालू होता. संध्याकाळ व्हायला आली. दूरवर दिवे दिसत होते.

“केशर,नक्कीच तिथे गाव असणार.” सुगंधा म्हणाली.

“व्हय,वडगाव हाय. आपल्याला तिथच थांबायला लागल.” खंडोजीने पुढे होऊन माहिती दिली.

अंधार पडायला त्यांनी वडगाव गाठले. तिथल्या एका छोट्याशा मंदिरात राहायची व्यवस्था झाली. सुभानराव अजूनही अशक्त होते.

“म्या,खायची काय येवस्था व्हती का बघतो.” खंडोजी म्हणाला.

“खंडोजी,आम्ही येऊ का सोबत?” केशरने विचारले.

खंडोजी आणि केशर सोबतीला रखमा असे निघाले. देवळाच्या एका पडवीत इनामदार शांत पडले होते. तेवढ्यात सुगंधाचा स्वर्गीय सुर घुमला.

तू दुर्गा अन तूच चंडिका, तूच साऱ्या जगताची माई.
जागर गाते पुन्हा पुन्हा मी,उदे उदे ग अंबाबाई.

सुगंधा देवीची स्तुती करत असताना देवळात दर्शनाला आलेल्या स्त्रिया भान हरवून तिचे गायन ऐकत होत्या. सुगंधा गायची थांबली आणि त्या स्त्रिया तिच्याजवळ आल्या.

“किती गोड गळा हाय तुझा पोरी.” एका आजीने तिच्या तोंडावर मायेने हात फिरवला.

त्या स्त्रिया निघून गेल्या. सुगंधा देवीचे दर्शन घेऊन बाहेर येऊन उभी राहिली.

तिला असे पाहून सुभानराव चालत तिच्याजवळ आले.

“अजून ठीक झाले नाही तुम्ही.” ती मागे न वळताच म्हणाली.

“तुला पाहिल्यावर मी सगळे विसरून जातो सुगंधा.” खाली बसत ते म्हणाले.

“माझ्यापेक्षा कितीतरी सुंदर स्त्रिया तुम्ही भोगल्या असणार.” तिच्या बोलण्यात नकळत धार आली.

“सुगंधा,आजवर खूप स्त्रिया पाहिल्यात मी. तू सगळ्यांपेक्षा वेगळी आहेस. तमासगीर तर तू नाहीच आहेस.”
इनामदार तिच्या नजरेत आरपार बघत म्हणाले.

“तुम्हाला वाटते तरी काय? कोण आहे मी?” सुगंधाने त्यांना विचारले.

त्यासरशी सुभानराव जरा थांबले आणि मग त्यांनी गायला सुरुवात केली.

तू नार सखे गुलजार,नजरेत तुझ्या अंगार.
जळूनी झालो खाक,पेटला वणवा इशकाचा.

चाल तुझी डौलदार,पाऊले अशी सुकुमार.
ओठ डाळिंबी ग लाल,नयन जणू तलवार.

तू हसताना साजणी, सांडे चांदणे भूवरी.
सौभाग्य चुडा हातात,ही कोणाची नवरी.

सुभानराव थांबले. अशक्त असल्याने त्यांना पुढे गाता येईना.

तू व्हावीस माझी सजणी करतो पुन्हा विनवणी.
सोड सखे अढीची गाठ,हो तुळस माझ्या अंगणी.

इनामदार उठून तिच्याकडे चालत आले आणि सुगंधा नकळत त्यांच्या मिठीत विसावली. असेच काही क्षण गेले आणि दोघेही आत मंदिरात जाऊन बसले. तोपर्यंत केशर आणि खंडोजी परत आले होते.

सुगंधा आज वेगळीच भासत होती. केशरला काय घडले याचा साधारण अंदाज आला होता. सर्वांनी जेवण केले. आज इथेच मुक्काम करून उद्या पहाटे साजगावकडे निघायचे ठरले. खंडोजी अतिशय सावध होता. आता काहीही करून साजगाव गाठले पाहिजे. त्याने मनात निर्धार केला.

“सुगंधा,अखेर तुला आपलेसे करून घेणारा भेटला तर?” केशरने विचारले.

“केशर आजपर्यंत असंख्य देखणे,धनवान पुरुष आयुष्यात आले. त्यातील कोणालाच मी वश झाले नाही. पण सुभानराव माझ्यावर खरे प्रेम करतात याची खात्री पटली आहे.”
सुगंधा हळूवार स्वरात म्हणाली.

“हो,पण तू साजगावला काय म्हणून जाणार? तुला वाड्यात काय म्हणून स्थान मिळणार?”
केशरने विचारले.

“अर्थात त्यांची पत्नी म्हणून. तरच ही सुगंधा साजगावची वेस ओलांडेल.” तिच्या डोळ्यात निर्धार दिसत होता.

त्या रात्री इनामदार शांत झोपले होते तर सुगंधा मात्र भविष्य काय असेल ह्या विचारात जागी होती. दुसऱ्या दिवशी पहाटेच प्रवास सुरू झाला. वेगाने साजगावकडे सगळेजण निघाले. दुरूनच साजगाव दिसू लागले.

“खंडोजी,पुढे जाऊन आम्ही आल्याची वर्दी द्या.” सुभानरावांनी हुकूम दिला.

सुगंधा आणि तिच्या साथीदार सगळे सामान घेऊन लांब उभ्या होत्या.

“सुगंधा, साजगाव आले.” इनामदार आनंदाने म्हणाले.

“हो,आता इथून पुढे माझे स्थान काय?” तिने विचारले.

“म्हणजे? मी तुला शब्द दिला आहे.” त्यांनी उत्तर दिले.

“असाच एक शब्द मस्तानीला देखील दिला होता. काय झाले त्याचे? ही सुगंधी तसे होऊ देणार नाही. तुम्ही माझ्याशी विवाह करा आणि मगच मी वेस ओलांडेल.”
सुगंधा थांबली.

“खंडोजी,आता तुम्ही स्वतः जाऊन शास्त्रीना घेऊन या. विवाह लावण्याच्या तयारीने यायला सांगा.

” सुभानराव गरजले. खंडोजी जायला निघाले.”खंडोजी,जरा जपून.” सुभानराव इशारा देत बोलले.

इकडे वाड्यावर इनामदार परत आल्याची वर्दी पोहोचली होती. गुणवंताबाई सावध झाल्या. त्यांनी त्यांची विश्वासू माणसे बोलावली.

“खंडोजीला गाठा. काहीही झाले तरी त्याला माझ्यासमोर हजर करा.” त्यांनी हुकूम सोडला.

खंडोजी वाऱ्याच्या वेगाने शास्त्रींच्या घरी पोहोचला.त्याने सुभानरावांनी दिलेला निरोप जसाच्या तसा दिला.

“खंडोजी,आईसाहेब रागावतील. असे कसे लग्न लावायचे?” त्यांनी शंका व्यक्त केली.

“बुवा,म्या हुकुमाचा ताबेदार. म्या माज काम केलं.” खंडोजी थांबला.

“खंडोजी चला. शेवटी इनामदार गादीच्या मालकाचा हुकूम ऐकावाच लागणार.”

त्यांनी आवश्यक सगळी सामुग्री घेतली आणि वेगाने ते बाहेर पडले.

“सुगंधा,तू विवाहासाठी तयार रहा. गुरुजी येतच असतील.” इनामदार म्हणाले.

सुगंधा विवाहासाठी तयार झाली. तिने आता मनाची संपूर्ण तयारी केली होती. खंडोजी अगदी सावध आणि सुरक्षित शास्त्रींना घेऊन आला. गंगाधर शास्त्री हजर झाले. त्यांनी लगेचच तयारी सुरू केली.

विवाहाचे विधी सुरू झाले. विवाह संपन्न होताच सुगंधा आशीर्वाद घ्यायला वाकली आणि तिच्यातील दिव्य शक्तीची जाणीव गंगाधर शास्त्रींना झाली.

आजवर अशा अनेक स्त्रिया वाड्यात आल्या आणि नंतर त्या कुठे गेल्या कोणालाही समजले नाही. परंतु सुगंधा वेगळी असल्याची जाणीव त्यांना झाली. त्याचवेळी पुढे येणारी संकटेदेखील जाणवत होती.

त्यांनी शब्द दिला.

इकडे खंडोजीने निघायची तयारी केली. सगुणाबाई त्यांचे पती परत आले म्हणून आनंदी होत्या. वाड्याच्या वरच्या सज्जात त्या सोन्याचे ओवळणीचे तबक घेऊन उभ्या होत्या.

तेवढ्यात त्यांचा खास माणूस वरती आला. त्याने सांगितलेली बातमी ऐकली आणि सगुणाबाई कोणाचीही परवा न करता तबक दासींच्या हाती देवून निघून गेल्या.

सुगंधा महालात येण्यासाठी निघाली. तिच्या आयुष्यातील नवे पर्व सुरू झाले होते.
