व्यंकट देव्हाऱ्यासमोर हात जोडून उभा होता. तो नोकरी शोधून शोधून थकला होता, घरात आई वडील, लहान भाऊ यांची जबाबदारी. त्याचं वय होत चाललं होतं, लग्नालाही मुलगी मिळेना. भावाचं सगळं बाकी…

एके दिवशी घरात गहू संपले. आईने वडिलांना सांगितलं तेव्हा वडीलांनी आईला हळूच बाजूला नेले आणि सांगितले

“पेन्शनचे सगळे पैसे प्रतीकच्या कॉलेजच्या फी साठी दिलेत. आता काहीही नाहीये माझ्याकडे”

“आता काय करायचं? थोडेफार असतील की हो..”

वडिलांनी खिशात हात घातला आणि म्हणाले

“हे वीस रुपये आहेत शेवटचे..”

आईच्या डोळ्यात पाणी आलं..

“थांबा, मी शेजारच्या वहिनींकडून उसनं पीठ आणते, उद्याची तर सोय होईल..”

“आणि परवा काय? आणि ही तीच बाई ना , जिच्याकडे काल चमचा भर विरजण मागितलं तर तुझा किती अपमान केला तिने, परत कशी जाऊ शकतेस तू तिच्याकडे?”

“पोटाला मान अपमान कळत नसतो..”
