त्या दिवशी मिताली सासरी जाण्याची तयारी करत होती. आई जवळ बसूनच तिला मदत करत होती.

“काय गं? आता सासरी किती दिवस राहणार?”

“पंधरा दिवस राहीन..”

“कशाला इतकं? त्यापेक्षा इथे थांब अजून काही दिवस… शेवटचे दोन चार दिवस जा..”

“आई माझ्याबद्दल जो विचार करतेस तो वहिनीबद्दल का करत नाहीस तू??”

“आल्यापासून बघतेय, तुला वहिनीचा फार पुळका आलेला दिसतोय, कायम तिची बाजू घेऊन बोलतेस..”

“आपल्या मुलीने पुढे जावं, बाहेर राहून आपला संसार थाटावा, कुणाच्याही बंधनाखाली राहू नये हेच मला वाटतं..”

“मग वहिनीने काय करावं? तिच्याबद्दल तर अगदी उलटा विचार असतो तुझ्या डोक्यात..आई ती सुद्धा कुणाची तरी मुलगी आहे, तिच्या आईने हा विचार का केला नाही मग??”

“तिच्या आईने संसारात नाक खुपसलेलं मला चालणार नाही..”

“मग तू काय वेगळं केलंस? माझ्या सासूबाईंनी एका शब्दाने तरी काही म्हटलं?”

“अगं वहिनीची गोष्ट वेगळी आहे…आमचं बघणं, घराचं बघणं हे कर्तव्यच आहे तिचं..”

“मग माझं कर्तव्य नाही का?”

आई मात्र यावेळी निरुत्तर झाली…

मितालीने प्रत्येक गोष्टीत असलेला विरोधाभास तिला दाखवून दिला…लेक असल्याने तिचं बोलणं काही अंशी का असेना आईला पटायला लागलं…

“आई, प्रत्येक सुनेचं कर्तव्यच असतं पण म्हणून प्रत्येकजण ते निभावतेच असं नाही…कितीतरी मुली या कर्तव्यापासून दूर पळतात, काहीजणी अगदी जीवावर आल्यासारखं करतात…पण वहिनी? तिने कुटुंबावरच्या प्रेमापोटी सगळं केलं, अगदी मनापासून. त्याबदल्यात कधी काही अपेक्षा केली नाही. पण तू कधी दोन शब्द कौतुकाचे ऐकवले नाहीस. चारचौघांत तिचं कौतुक केलं नाहीस…

आई, कर्तव्य प्रत्येकाला असतात, पण तो ते किती आपुलकीने निभावतो यावर त्याचं व्यक्तिमत्त्व ठरत असतं. वहिनीला काय अवघड होतं दादा ला सांगून कॅनडाला शिफ्ट व्हायला? पण नाही केलं तिने तसं…तिने तुमचा विचार केला…

आणि समजा तिने तसं केलं असतं तर? तरीही तू तिला बोल लावले असते की हिला कर्तव्याची काही जाणीवच नाही म्हणून..म्हणजे कर्तव्य केलं की “तिचं कामच आहे ते..” आणि नाही केलं तर “काही जाणीवच नाही..” असं म्हणायचं, ही कोणती पद्धत आहे आई??

माझ्या सासरी माझ्या सासू सासऱ्यांना मला दोष देता आला असता..पण नाही, चार दिवस फक्त मी त्यांच्यासाठी काहीतरी करते पण ते त्यांना वर्षभर पुरतं… सर्वांना माझं कौतुक सांगत फिरतात..पण जी वहिनी आयुष्यभर तुम्हा सर्वांसाठी सगळं करते तर तुम्ही मात्र तिला अशी वागणूक देतात?

आई, कर्तव्य प्रत्येकाचं असतं. पण फार कमी लोकं ती निभावतात. तू नशीबवान आहेस जी तुला वहिनी सारखी सून मिळाली…

आई शांतपणे ऐकत होती,
