“चंपा, तुझे मै तेरे माँ जैसे लगती ना? तो सुन, एक आई आपल्या मुलीला कोठ्यावर बसवेल की नाही माहित नाही; पण ज्या मुलामुळे कोठ्यावर यावं लागलं त्याला तिच्या दिलात बसवण्याची इजाजत कधीच देणार नाही. मै भी नहीं दूंगी, ये गाठ बांध ले.” शीलाआँटीचा स्वर हळवा झाला आणि चंपा तिच्या कुशीत शिरली.
दोघींच्या डोळ्यातून धारा बरसत होत्या.. कितीतरी वेळ!
“ए मेरी चंपाराणी, तू रो मत. कभी कभी ए शराब साली इतनी चढती हैं की मै कुछ भी बोल जाती.
तुझं तुझ्या त्या प्रकाशवर प्रेम आहे ना? मग जा तू इथून. विचार त्याला दरडावून की तुझ्यासोबत इतकं काही घडलं तेव्हा कुठे होता तो? वेगवेगळ्या माणसांसोबत इतक्या रात्री घालवल्यावरही तो तुला स्वीकारायला तयार आहे का हे विचार आणि त्याचं उत्तर हो असेल ना तर जा राणी इथून. इथून पळून जा. मी अडवणार नाही. कारण इतकं सगळं घडल्यावर तो तुला स्वीकारत असेल तर त्याचं अजूनही तुझ्यावर प्रेम आहे हे सिद्ध होते.
जा चंपा, जा. जी ले अपनी जिंदगी. मै नहीं रोखुंगी.” तिला स्वतःपासून दूर करत शीलाआँटी भावनिक होत म्हणाली.
“शीलाआँटी, तू जा बोलशील आणि मी जाईन होय? तुझी नशा उतरल्यावर आजपर्यंत कित्येकदा मला इथून जाण्यासाठी तू सांगितलंस. मी नाही जाऊ शकले. तू इजाजत दिलीस तरी माझं मन ती परवानगी कधीच देणार नाही.” तिचा हात हातात घट्ट पकडून चंपा म्हणाली.
“इतका विश्वास? कोणावर रे?”
“प्रेमावर!” चंपा मंद हसली.
“त्याचं प्रेम आधीही होतं आणि कदाचित आजही तेवढंच असेल. मला शोधत तो जेव्हा इथवर पोहचला ना तेव्हा त्याचं एकच अर्जव होतं.. मला सोबत घेऊन जाण्याचं. तेव्हाच मी गेले नाही तर आता का जाणार गं?”
“चंपा..”
“प्रेम तर त्यानेही केले होते आणि मी ही. त्या प्रेमाची खूप मोठी किंमत आम्हाला मोजायला लागली. इतक्या दिवसात त्याला विसरायचा प्रयत्न करतेय पण ते शक्य झाले नाही. रोज कुठल्या ना कुठल्या कारणाने तो आठवत राहिला. तरीही एक मन म्हणत होतं की त्याच्या मनाच्या कप्प्यात मी असले तरी त्याने स्वतःचे आयुष्य सुरु केले असेल; पण नाही गं.
आज मनस्वी आली आणि जाणवलं, माझा प्रकाश तिथेच आहे जिथे तो मला शेवटचं भेटून गेला होता. जे वचन त्याच्याकडून घेतलं ते त्याने पुरे करून दाखवले.
शीलाआँटी हे प्रेमच आहे ना गं?”
“हम्म. प्यार की परिभाषा सबके लिए अलग हैं. तुझ्यासाठी त्याला विसरायचा प्रयत्न करणं प्रेम आहे तर त्याच्यासाठी कदाचित तुला आठवत तुझ्या वचनाला जगणं म्हणजे प्रेम. या प्रेमाने तुमची खूप परीक्षा पाहिली. देव करो नि कधी तुम्हाला एक व्हायची संधी मिळाली तर तू दवडू नकोस चंपा.”
शीलाआँटीने असे म्हणताच चंपा खळखळून हसली.
“आँटी, आतापर्यंत तू मला प्रेम करायला इजाजत देणार नाहीस म्हणून गळ ओकत होतीस आणि आता अचानक ही परवानगी?”
“चढली होती रे तेव्हा. म्हणून तसं काही बोलले असेल. आता म्हणतेय ना, तुला खूष राहण्याचा पूर्ण अधिकार आहे आणि ती खुशी केवळ तुझा प्रकाशच तुला देऊ शकतो.”
“एक वेश्या कधी खुश असू शकते? चंपाच्या प्रश्नाने शीलाआँटीच्या काळजात एक कळ उठली.
“मघाशी बोलताना तू शुद्धीत नसलीस तरी मी होते की. तू म्हणाली होतीस ते खरं तर आहे. आपला देह विकणे हाच आपला पर्मनंट धंदा आहे. मी आपल्या धंद्यातून अशी फारकत घेऊ शकत नाही ना? हं आता आदीसारखा एखादा फक्त चेहरा बघून पैसे देऊन जातो,पण इतरांचं काय?
त्यातल्या त्यात एक समाधान की मी कोणालाही हात लावू देत नाही, ज्यानं माल अधिक दिला त्या रात्री चंपा त्याची. सोन्याचं अंडं देणारी कोंबडी जी आहे मी.”
“चंपा, तू गैसमज नको करून घेऊस.”
“ना, ना. गैरसमज नाही. खरं तेच सांगतेय. सोन्याचं अंडं देतेय म्हणून माझा हा सगळा थाटबाट आहे. ही महालासारखी सजलेली माझी खोली, हे पडदे, हे टेबल, हा राजेशाही बेड, माझं राहणं, माझें कपडे, माझ्या वस्तू.. सगळं महागडं. काय म्हणतात..? हं, एकदम क्लासी!” तिचे मोती पुन्हा विखूरले.
“पण हे सगळं कोणासाठी माहिती आहे?” तिच्या प्रश्नात एक विषण्णता.
“कोणासाठी?”
“प्रकाशसाठी!” तिच्या डोळ्यातून दोन थेंब खाली आले.
“एकदातरी तो इथं येईल तेव्हा त्याला हे कळेल की आता हीच माझी दुनिया आहे. मी खूप खुश आहे. खूप खुश. चंपाबाई शीलाआँटीच्या कोठीवरची राणी आहे हे त्याला पटेल यासाठी हा अट्टहास!
आँटी, त्याचं प्रेम रत्नावर होतं, या चंपावर नाही आणि माझ्यातील रत्ना केव्हाच हरवलीय. आता मी केवळ चंपा आहे तिच्याशिवाय कुणीच नाही.” तिचे डोळे काठोकाठ भरले होते.
“चंपा..”
“इथे आलेल्या प्रत्येकीची एक स्टोरी असते असे म्हणालीस ना गं तू? तुझ्या स्टोरीप्रमाणे माझीही एक स्टोरी आहे. तू तुझ्या प्रेमावर आंधळा विश्वास ठेवून मुंबई गाठलीस नि मी माझं प्रेम मिळेल या आंधळेपणाने गाव सोडलं. इथे आल्यावर मात्र प्रत्येकीचे एकच प्रारब्ध.. नसलेली इज्जत रोज नव्याने विकणे!
उबग आलाय या सगळ्यांचा शीलाआँटी पण करणार काय? तू म्हणतेस तसं.. पापी पेट का सवाल.. तो उरतोच ना?”
“चंपा, ही दुनिया सोडून अख्ख आयुष्य काही न करता निव्वळ बसून खाऊ शकशील एवढं तू कमावलं आहेस. तरीही यातून तुझा पाय बाहेर पडत नाहीये. तुलाच दानधर्म करायचा शौक ना? अनाथाश्रम, वृद्धाश्रम, संस्थेचे दवाखाने.. कुठे कुठे दान करत असतेस तुलाच ठाऊक आणि हे सारं करायचं तर तेही निनावी. एवढा पैसा कोण पाठवतोय याची तिथल्या लोकांकडे नोंद देखील नसते. हे कसले दानधर्म?” नाक मुरकटून शीलाआंटीने विचारले.
“पन्नास हजार रोख, चंपाबाई, वेश्या, शालिमार गल्ली, नाशिक या नावाने जर कुठली देणगी दिली तर एकजण तरी स्वीकारतील का प्रश्नच आहे ना? त्यामुळे हे निनावी दान. भ्रष्टाचार करून एखाद्या नेत्याने शाळा काढली तरी त्याच्या नावाचा नुसता गवगवा होईल आणि आपण कष्टाच्या पैशानं चांगलं काम करायला गेलो तर कोणी ढुंकूनही पाहणार नाही. त्यापेक्षा हे असं निनावी देत राहायचं. गरजू लोकांना मदत तरी होते. आपल्या गाठीशी तेवढंच पुण्य!” ती हसली.
“बडी आयी पाप पुण्य की बात करनेवाली. चल, खाना खा ले.” दुसरा घास तिला भरवण्याचा प्रयत्न करत शीलाआँटी.
“आता खरच नको. जेवावसं वाटतंच नाहीये.”
“ऐसा कैसा? बिमार पडल्यावर तो डॉक्टर थोडाच तुझा इलाज करायला इथं येणार आहे? आणि आला तरी मी त्याला हात लावू देणार नाही. चल, खा अभी.”
तिच्या उसण्या रागाने घाबरल्याचे नाटक करत चंपाने घास खाल्ला.
“शीलाआँटी, तू मान या मत मान, पर पिछले जनम में तुही मेरी माँ रही होगी.” आवेगाने चंपाने तिला मिठी मारली.
“ऐसा कुछ नहीं, मैने कहाँ ना मै किसी की माँ नहीं बन सकती मतलब नहीं. वो तो सिर्फ..”
“हां. मला माहित आहे. मी जेव्हा पहिल्यांदा इथे आले तेव्हा तुला तुझी आठवण झाली म्हणून माझ्यावर जीव जडला. इतक्या वर्षात हे सगळं मला पाठ झालंय गं.”
ती म्हणाली तसे तिच्या पाठीत एक धपाटा घालत शीलाआँटी नुसतीच हसली.
“ए, पण माझी आई अजूनही माझ्यावर रागावली असेल का? की आपली मुलगी काहीतरी चांगलं काम करून त्यांचा खर्च चालवते याचा अभिमान वाटत असेल? मी काय करतेय हे तिला ठाऊक झालं असेल का गं? आणि कळलं असेल तर.. तर मला माफ करू शकेल?” पुन्हा तिच्या डोळ्यात पाणी झळकले.
शीलाआँटीऽऽ”
“क्या हैं रे? आती हूंऽऽ अन्वर हाक देतोय. क्या लफडा हैं, देखती मै. तू जेवण कर आणि मग आराम. आज की रात तुझे छुट्टी.” तिच्या डोक्यावरून हात फिरवत शीलाआँटी दाराजवळ आली.
अन्वर तिथेच होता. दोन नव्या कस्टमरचा पैसा जमा करायचा होता म्हणून तो तिला बोलवायला आला होता.
शीलाआँटी गेली. चंपा तशीच ताटाजवळ बसून होती. खायची इच्छा नव्हतीच. हात जोडून ताट बाजूला सारणार तेव्हा तिला पुन्हा श्रावणातील ती रात्र आठवली. लहान भावाच्या भुकेसाठी इंदूताईंपुढे तिने जोडलेले हात.. त्यांनी दिलेल्या गरम भाकरी आणि ती खाऊन सगळ्यांचे फुललेले चेहरे.

पुन्हा एकदा आईची आठवण! पुन्हा एकदा सगळ्या आठवणींचे रिंगण..!
