प्रयत्नांती परमेश्वर.”ई,किती घाणेरडे अक्षर आहे तुझे?” एक मुलगा जोरात हसला आणि क्षणात वामनच्या डोळ्यात पाणी आले.घरात अठरा विश्वे दारिद्र्य असणाऱ्या शेतकरी कुटुंबात जन्मलेला चुणचुणीत मुलगा वामन सदाशिव गावडे. घरी मोठे कुटुंब असले तरी कोरडवाहू शेती त्यामुळे जे पिकायचे ते पोटाला पुरायचे नाही. अशा परिस्थितीत वामन शाळेत पोहोचला ती सगळी कृपा पाटील गुरुजींची.गोरगरीब,वाडी वस्तीवर असलेल्या मुलांना शिक्षण मिळावे अशी त्यांची फार तळमळ असे. त्यांनी वामनला चौथीपर्यंत शिकवले. तेवढ्यावर ते थांबले नाहीत तर त्याला शहरातील नामांकित शाळेत प्रवेश मिळवून दिला. तिथे त्याची राहायची,खायची सोय लावली.”गुर्जी,पोराला इतक्या लांब ठीवायला नग वाटत.” वामनची आई म्हणाली.”हौसाबाई माझ्यावर विश्वास ठेवा. तुमचा वामन खूप मोठा होईल.” गुरुजींनी त्यांना समजावले.गुरुजी स्वतः त्याला इथे सोडायला आले होते.”वामन,गावातून बाहेर जाणारा तू पहिला मुलगा आहेस. तू छान शिकलास तर इतरांना पुढे संधी मिळेल. दगडाचे घाव सोसले तरच देवपण हे लक्षात ठेव.”छोटा वामन फक्त मान डोलवत होता. आई दादा,भावंडे,गावातली छोटी शाळा,सवंगडी सगळे मागे पडले होते. त्याला रडू आले तरी त्याने स्वतः ला सावरले होते. आज शाळेचा पहिलाच दिवस आणि वरील प्रसंग घडला. वामन डोळे पुसत मागे जाऊन बसला.दुसऱ्या तासाला मराठीच्या पाठक बाई आत आल्या. त्यांनी सगळ्या वर्गावर नजर फिरवली. त्यांना मागे शेवटी बसलेला वामन दिसला.” शेवटचा नवीन मुलगा उभा रहा. नाव काय तुझे?” त्यांनी विचारले.”म्या वामन.” त्याने कसेबसे उत्तर दिले आणि सगळा वर्ग परत हसायला लागला.वामनच्या डोळ्यात पाणी आले. आता बाई आपला अपमान करणार हे त्याने ओळखले. पाठक बाई चालत त्याच्या जवळ आल्या. त्यांनी प्रेमाने त्याच्या डोक्यावरून हात फिरवला.”बाळा,भाषा बदलता येते. शिकता येते. अजिबात काळजी करू नकोस.” बाईंचे उत्तर ऐकताच वामन छान हसून खाली बसला.पाठक बाई वसतिगृहाच्या आवारात त्यांच्या दोन मुलांसोबत रहात. बाई सगळ्या मुलांना सारखेच वागवत असत. वामनला ह्या बाई मनापासून आवडल्या.वामन मन लावून अभ्यास करायचा प्रयत्न करत असे. त्याला अभ्यासाची मुळात आवड होती. परंतु त्याचे राहणीमान,अक्षर,भाषा यावरून इतर मुले चिडवत असत. त्याच्याशी बोलत नसत. त्याला खेळायला घेत नसत. वामन एकटा बसून राही.त्याला गावातील भावंडे,सवंगडी यांची फार आठवण यायची. एक दिवस वामन घरून आणलेला लाडू खात होता.”ये हा बघ कसला लाडू खातोय?” मधु ओरडला.”हो रे,कसले घाणेरडे पदार्थ खातो काय माहित?” वसंत म्हणाला.”वशा,माझ्या मायन दिला हाय लाडू. काय बी बोलू नग.” वामन चिडला.”ह्या ह्या ह्या,भाषा बघा आणि हा कसला घाणेरडा लाडू?” वसंतने तो लाडू मातीत फेकला आणि मग मात्र वामनने वसंतला चांगलेच बडवले.तेवढ्यात पाठक बाई धावत आल्या.”वामन,वामन थांब बाळा.” बाळा शब्द कानावर पडताच वामन थांबला.मागून पळत येणाऱ्या पाठक बाई त्याच्या जवळ पोहोचताच वामन त्यांच्या पायाला घट्ट मिठी मारून रडायला लागला.”बाई,म्या कायबी केल नव्हत. ह्यो वशा मला माय वरन चिडवत होता.”वामन रडत बोलत असताना आजूबाजूची मुले हसत होती. बाईंनी आधी वामनचे डोळे पुसले.”वामन,चल माझ्यासोबत.” बाई त्याच्या हाताला धरून चालू लागल्या.पाठोपाठ डोळे पुसत वामन चालत होता. आता आपले काही खरे नाही ह्या विचारांनी तो घाबरला.”बाई,म्या पाया पडतो पर माझी तक्रार करू नगा आन मला शाळतनबी काडू नगा. नायतर पाटील गुर्जी,माझी माय आन दादाला लई वाईट वाटल. पायजे तर मला आजच्या दिस उपाशी ठीवा.”छोटासा वामन पटकन बोलून गेला. तोपर्यंत बाई त्यांच्या खोलीजवळ पोहोचल्या होत्या. बाईंचे यजमान त्याच संस्थेच्या कॉलेजला प्राचार्य होते. त्यांना लांबून बघूनच सगळी मुले घाबरत असत.बाई वऱ्हांड्यात पोहोचल्या. मागे रडणारा वामन बघून ते हसायला लागले.”अरेच्चा,पाठक बाईंनी शिक्षा केल्याने रडलेला पहिला विद्यार्थी पाहायचा दुर्मिळ योग आला तर.”असे म्हणून ते हसायला लागले.”सुमन,ये सुमन बाहेर ये.”बाईंनी हाक मारली आणि त्यांची आठवीत शिकणारी मुलगी बाहेर आली.”सुमन,याला आत घेऊन जा आणि खायला दे.”बाईंनी वाक्य उच्चारताच त्यांचे यजमान पुन्हा हसले,”तरीच, पाठक बाई आणि शिक्षा?””थट्टा पुरे. तुम्हाला मी मागे बोलले होते ना खेड्यातून एक हुशार चुणचुणीत मुलगा आला आहे. तोच हा वामन.””हाच का तो? ज्याला बघून तुम्हाला तुमचे बालपण आठवते.” त्यांनी गंभीर होत विचारले.”हो,कोकणातील खेड्यातून आलेल्या अडाणी गोदाला सगळे हसायचे. माझे कितीतरी गोड शालेय क्षण त्यात हरवले. वामन सोबत तसे व्हायला नको. तो फुलायला हवा.”मनाशी काहीतरी निर्धार करत बाई म्हणाल्या.काय उपाय करतील बाई?पाहूया पुढील भागात.
अंतिम भाग
प्रयत्नांती परमेश्वर अंतिम भागमागील भागात आपण पाहिले खेड्यातून शहरात शिकायला आलेला वामन इथल्या वातावरणात रुजत नाही. त्याचवेळी त्याला पाठक बाई भेटतात. आता पाहूया पुढे.सुमन रडणाऱ्या वामनला घरात घेऊन गेली. त्याला गोड लाडू दिला.”सुमनताय,हा लाडू लई भारी हाय. मायन दिलेला लाडू असा नाय. पण ग्वाड हाय.” वामन म्हणाला.”हो का? मला देशील खायला?” सुमन हसून म्हणाली.”तुमी खासाल?” वामन दबकला.”अरे आईने प्रेमाने दिलेले काहीही छानच की.” सुमन त्याला समजावत होती.”व्हय ना? वशा माझ्या मायन दिलेल्या लाडुला घाण म्हणला.” वामनचे डोळे भरून आले.
“अस्स,त्याला बघू आपण नंतर.” सुमन त्याला पाणी देत बोलली.
“सुमनताय,मला अस चांगल बोलता येत न्हाय,कापड न्हाय म्हणून म्या अडाणी राहायचं?”वामन असे म्हणाला आणि बाई आत आल्या.”वामन बाळ,भाषा शिकता येते. कपडे स्वच्छ करता येतात फक्त प्रयत्न करायची तयारी हवी.””बाई, तुमच लिवन किती मस्त हाय. पाटील गुर्जी लई समजवायच पर ध्यान नाय दिलं.” वामन अपराधी स्वरात म्हणाला.”हातीच्च्या एवढेच ना? आपण सुधारू तुझे अक्षर.” बाई हसल्या.”म्हंजी माज लिवन आपल अक्षर अस साजर व्हईल?” वामनचा विश्वास बसत नव्हता.
“का नाही होणार प्रयत्न वाळूचे कण रगडीता तेलही गळे.” बाई जेवायला वाढत म्हणाल्या.
दुसऱ्या दिवशी वामन लवकर उठला त्याने आपले शाळेचे कपडे छान धुवून काढले. रविवार असून त्याने पाठक बाईंचे घर गाठले.बाईंनी त्याला विचारले,”वामन,तुला मातीत खेळायला आवडते ना?””व्हय!” असे म्हणून त्याने जीभ चावली आणि हो म्हणाला.”बर,अरे हळुहळू होईल सवय. चल आता बाहेर.” बाई त्याला बागेत घेऊन गेल्या.एके ठिकाणी छान मऊ लाल माती होती.”किती मऊ माती हाय.” वामन आनंदाने उड्या मारत म्हणाला.” वामन ह्या मातीत मला अ काढून दाखव बोटाने.” वामनने अक्षर काढले.”वामन मला सांग जर आपण विजार अंगात आणि अंगरखा पायात घातला तर कसे दिसेल?” बाईंनी प्रेमाने विचारले.”वंगाळ दिसल.” त्याने उत्तर दिले.”हो ना? मग प्रत्येक अक्षर लिहायची एक पद्धत असते.” असे म्हणून बाईंनी तेच अक्षर त्याला पुन्हा काढून दाखवले.”आता तू बोटाने हे अक्षर काढायचा सराव कर त्यानंतर मग कागदावर.”बाईंनी त्याला समजावले.जवळपास आठवडाभर वामन एकच अक्षर काढत होता.”सुमनताई कटाळा आला. किती दिस तेच करायच?””वामन तुझ्या ती म्हण लक्षात आहे ना? प्रयत्नांती परमेश्वर. तुला हसणाऱ्या मुलांना तू कृतीतून उत्तर दे.”सुमन त्याला समजावत म्हणाली.वामन प्रामाणिकपणे आपली भाषा आणि अक्षर सुधारू लागला. आपली ग्रामीण बोली गोड असली तरी शिक्षणात प्रमाण भाषाच वापरावी लागते हे त्याला समजले होते.तसेच न कंटाळा करता एकेक अक्षर तो गिरवत होता. असेच सहा सात महिने गेले. त्यानंतर एक दिवस शाळेत विविध स्पर्धा जाहीर झाल्या. त्यातील हस्ताक्षर स्पर्धा अतिशय मानाची समजली जाई.पाठक बाईंनी वर्गात येताच घोषणा केली.”आंतरशालेय स्पर्धा सुरू होत आहेत.” त्यांनी विविध स्पर्धा वाचून दाखवल्या.वामनने धावणे, उडी मारणे ,मल्लखांब अशा विविध स्पर्धात भाग घेतला. संध्याकाळी बाईंच्या घरी गेल्यावर तो आनंदाने सुमनला सांगत होता.”वामन तू हस्ताक्षर स्पर्धेत भाग घे.”सुमन म्हणाली.”काय? ताई पण सगळ्या शाळांत कितीतरी सुंदर अक्षर असणारी मुले असतील. मी सहामाही परीक्षेत लिहिले.त्याला बरे आहे असे म्हणले गुरुजी.” वामन प्रमाण भाषेत बोलायला लागला होता.”वामन,जसे तू बोलायला शिकलास तसेच लिहायला देखील. सहामाही होऊन दोन महिने झालेत. स्पर्धेला अजून तीन आठवडे आहेत. आपण दोघे तुझा आणखी सराव घेऊ.”सुमन समजावत होती.त्याबरोबर वामनचे डोळे चमकले. त्याने दुसऱ्या दिवशी हस्ताक्षर स्पर्धेत नाव दिले.”वसंत ऐकलेस का? कावळ्यांना हंस झाल्याची स्वप्न पडायला लागली बाबा.”मधु हसून म्हणाला.”हो ना, ती चोंबडी सुमन सांगते आणि काही मूर्ख ऐकतात.” वसंत म्हणाला.सगळा वर्ग हसला. पण वामन काहीच बोलला नाही. त्याने मल्लखांब,धावणे,फेकीच्या स्पर्धा याबरोबर हस्ताक्षर सराव चालूच ठेवला.
तीन आठवड्यांनी स्पर्धा सुरू झाल्या. वामन मल्लखांब स्पर्धेत पहिला आला. तसेच इतर स्पर्धात देखील.त्याने क्रमांक मिळवले. सगळेजण कौतुक करत होते.हस्ताक्षर स्पर्धेसाठी लिहिलेले उतारे सर्व विद्यार्थ्यांनी पाठवले. दोन दिवसांनी मुख्याध्यापक आणि पाठक बाई वर्गात आल्या.”वामन गावडे उभा राहा.” मुख्याध्यापक म्हणाले.वामन घाबरत उभा राहिला.”काय घोळ घातला याने काय माहीत?” एकजण मागून हळूच म्हणाला.”मुलांनो,आजवर हस्ताक्षर स्पर्धेत आपला विद्यार्थी जिंकला नव्हता. ती कमाल वामनने करून दाखविली आहे. मला अभिमान आहे की तो माझ्या शाळेच्या विद्यार्थी आहे. ह्या वर्षीचे आष्टपैलू विद्यार्थी पारितोषिक आपण त्याला देणार आहोत.”ह्या कौतुकाने वामनचे डोळे भरून आले. वर्ग संपताच वामन पळत पाठक बाईंच्या घरी गेला.”बाई,एका अडाणी मुलाला तुम्ही किती प्रेम दिले. आज हे सगळे तुमच्यामुळे मिळाले आहे. “वामन रडत म्हणाला.”वामन बाळ,मी फक्त तुला मार्ग दाखवला. कष्ट तर तुझेच आहेत ना? ते म्हणतात ना…”तेवढ्यात सुमन जोरात ओरडली,”प्रयत्नांती परमेश्वर.”वामन बाईंनी दिलेला लाडू घेऊन नाचत बाहेर पडला. एका सुरवंटाचे फुलपाखरू झालेले पाहून बाईंचे डोळे नकळत भरून आले.विद्यार्थी शिक्षक नात्यात असे अनेक प्रसंग येतात. एखादा विद्यार्थी असा छान बदलत जातो आणि शिक्षक अधिकाधिक आनंदी समृध्द होतो. त्याचीच ही एक छोटीशी गोष्ट.©®प्रशांत कुंजीर.
