बाळ मोठं होत होतं. तो चालायला शिकत होता. सासूबाई कायम त्याच्या अवतीभवती असत, त्याला काही लागू नये, तो पडू नये म्हणून.
एकदा असंच सासूबाई पोळ्या लाटत असतांना मागून बाळ चालत आलं आणि हळूच पडलं, अगदी जागच्या जागी. आई घाबरल्या, “वृंदा…अगं घे त्याला..माझे हात भरलेत..”
वृंदा मागून आली,
“थांबा आई, उचलू नका त्याला…तो चार वेळा पडेल आणि पाचव्यांदा स्वतःहून उठायला शिकेल..”
“अगं किती लहान आहे तो..”
“आई तो जागच्या जागी पडलाय, लागायचा प्रश्नच नाही. आणि प्रत्येकवेळी त्याला आपण आधार द्यायला गेलो तर तो स्वतःहून उठायला शिकणारच नाही. आपल्यावरच अवलंबून राहील. प्रत्येक ठिकाणी आपण त्याच्या सोबत थोडीच असणार आहोत. त्याच्यात आत्मविश्वास तयार करण्याची हीच सुरवात आहे. नाहीतर आयुष्यात तो कुठेही स्वतःचं डोकं न वापरता आपल्या कुबड्या घेऊन चालेल..”
सासूबाई एकदम स्तब्ध झाल्या. वृंदा जो आपल्या मुलाबद्दल विचार करत होती तो आपण केला होता का? या विचारात त्या मग्न झाल्या.
संध्याकाळी कैलास घरी आला, उदास चेहरा घेऊन. आईने आणि वृंदाने कारण विचारले तेव्हा तो रडतच म्हणाला,
“आई, मला कामावरून काढून टाकायची धमकी देताय..”
“काय?? पण का?”
“मी काहीही चुकीचं केलेलं नाही, पण मॅनेजरचं म्हणणं आहे की या पोस्टवर असतांना सुद्धा तुम्ही जबाबदारी स्वतःहून घेत नाहीत..प्रत्येक ठिकाणी तुम्हाला माझी मदत लागते. माझं काम दुसऱ्यावर सोपवावे म्हणून तुमची नियुक्ती केली पण तुम्हाला चारचौघांत बोलायला लावलं, मिटिंग घ्यायला लावली तर तुम्ही समोर उभं राहायलाही कचरतात..आता आई तूच सांग मी काय करू?? मी खूप घाबरतो आई…”
सासूबाईंचे डोळे खाडकन उघडले. सकाळी बाळाचा प्रसंग आठवला, मुलाच्या या परिस्थितीला आपणच जबाबदार आहोत याची त्यांना जाणीव झाली. त्यांनी त्या रात्री खूप विचार केला आणि दुसऱ्या दिवशी सांगितलं..
“मी आता गावी परत जातेय, कैलास आता तू आणि तुझ्या कुटुंबाची जबाबदारी तू उचल..”
“आई?? काय झालं तुला? वृंदा काही बोलली का?”
“तिच्यावर आरोप करणं बंद कर..ती काहीही बोलली नाही… गावी तुझ्या वडिलांना माझी गरज आहे. आणि तू आता मोठा झाला आहेस, स्वतः स्वतःचे निर्णय घ्यायला शिक जरा..”
कैलासला आपल्या कुबड्या कुणीतरी काढून घेतल्यासारखं वाटलं. पण आईचा आक्रमक पवित्रा बघून तो शांत बसला.
आईला रडतच त्याने निरोप दिला. पण नंतर मात्र कैलासमध्ये सकारात्मक बदल होऊ लागला. प्रत्येक ठिकाणी तो स्वतःचे निर्णय स्वतः घेऊ लागला, त्याच्यात आत्मविश्वास आला आणि ऑफिसमधले वादही बंद झाले, कैलासला सुद्धा हा बदल जाणवू लागला.
त्याला पुन्हा एकदा बढती मिळाली, येताना त्याने बायकोसाठी सोन्याची चेन आणली आणि म्हणाला,
“तू बरोबर बोलत होतीस…”
