एक इजाजत!
भाग -१३
ती दोघं येतील हा विश्वास मनात होताच पण वच्छीच्या बोलण्याने मनात शंका निर्माण झाली होती.
‘ती मोठी माणसं.. खरंच येतील ना?’

“बाबा, तुम्ही म्हनालात तसे आईला भेटायला गेला होतात का?” डोळ्यात उत्तर जाणून घ्यायच्या भाव घेऊन मनस्वीने प्रकाशला विचारले.
दोन्ही हातांना एकमेकात गुंफवून त्यावर हनुवटी ठेवून मनू विचारत होती. डोळ्यात कितीतरी प्रश्न आणि उत्तर जाणून घ्यायची उत्सुकता!
“मनू, तू तिला आई म्हणू नकोस गं. मला मग कसतरी होतं.”
“ओह! अच्छा? समवन इज ब्लशिंग हं.” हनुवटीखालचे हात काढून तिने ते गालावर ठेवले.
“मनूऽ” तिचे कान पकडत प्रकाश.
ओह, सॉरी. सॉरी. पण मग मी त्यांना काय म्हणू? बरं हे सांगा, ‘छोटा प्रकाश त्या छोट्याशा गोड रत्नाला भेटायला गेला होता का?’ असं विचारणं ठिक राहील ना?” ती मिश्किल हसली.
वेडी आहेस तू.” प्रकाशने हलकेच डोक्यावर हात मारून घेतला.
“टेल मी समथिंग डिफरन्ट द्याट आय डोन्ट नो. माझा वेडेपणा मला माहितीये.” डोळे मिचकावत ती.
“चला आजच्यापुरते एवढे पुरे आहे. आता झोपायला जाऊया.” तो उठत म्हणाला.
“बाबा, इट्स चिटिंग हं. तुम्ही म्हणाला होतात की तुम्ही सारं काही सांगणार आहात.”
“हो, म्हणालो होतो; पण आजच सारं सांगणार असं नव्हतो बोललो.”
“बाबा, प्लीज..
“नाही हं मनुड्या, सकाळी मॉर्निंग वॉक साठी उठायचं आहे. त्यानंतर आवरल्यावर दवाखान्याची घाई. तुझं बरंय, तू सुट्टीवर आहेस ;पण माझं तसं नाहीये ना? तेव्हा आता मला झोपणे गरजेचे आहे. चलो, गुडनाईट.” तिच्या डोक्यावर एक टपली मारून तो त्याच्या खोलीत जायला निघाला.
“बाबा, मनात इतक्या सुंदर आठवणी मोरपीस फिरवत असताना खरंच का तुम्हाला झोप येणार आहे?” मनस्वीच्या प्रश्नावर त्याने तिच्याकडे वळून असे पाहिले की ती पुढचं काही बोलू शकली नाही.
“गुडनाईट बाबा अँड स्वीट ड्रीम्स. आज मलादेखील लवकरच झोप आलीये.” जांभई द्यायचे नाटक करून तिने तोंडासमोर चुटकी वाजवत त्याच्यासमोरून उठून ती तिच्या खोलीत पळाली.
आठवणीचं मोरपीस!
झोपण्यासाठी म्हणून बेडवर पहुडला असला तरी मनस्वीचे शब्द प्रकाशच्या मनात घोळत होते.
तिने म्हटलं तसं छोटीशी गोड रत्ना! ती गोडुली तशीच तर होती. नाजूकशी, तलम.. मोरपीसासारखी. लहान वयात आलेल्या जबाबदारीने कधी कधी एकदम मोठी झाल्यासारखी वागायची नाहीतर अशी किती निरागस होती.
डोळे मिटून त्याने आपली कुस बदलवली. झोप खरंच कुठे येणार होती? मनस्वीने म्हटले तसे आठवणीचे मोरपीस मनाला स्पर्श करत होते. गोऱ्या गोऱ्या गालांची नि पिटुकल्या गुलाबी ओठांची छोटी रत्ना त्याला सारखी खुणावत होती. तोही मग भूतकाळाच्या पायऱ्या अलगद उतरू लागला.
“..तुमी दोघं येतो बोल्ले होते ना? मग का नाही आलात? आय म्हणते ते खरंच हाय, आपण आपली पायरी सोडून वागायचे नसते. मी तेच केलं अन् तुमची वाट पाहत ऱ्हायले; पण तुमी कुठले येता? तुम्ही मोठी माणसं ना? आन् आम्ही गरीब. म्हणून तुमी आले नाय ना?” टपोऱ्या डोळ्यात असंख्य प्रश्न घेऊन उभी असलेली रत्ना कंबरेवर हात ठेवून गौरी आणि प्रकाशला विचारत होती.
“अगं, अगं.. थांब की. एकावेळी किती बोलशील?” गौरीने तिच्या सुसाट सुटलेल्या गाडीला ब्रेक लावला म्हणून नाहीतर ती थांबलीच नसती.
“एवढ्याश्या डोक्यात काय काय विचार भरून ठेवलेस गं? मैत्रीच्या नात्यात कुठलेच बंधन नसते हे मी परवाच तुला सांगितले होते ना? इतक्यात विसरलीस देखील?” तिच्या डोक्यावर टपली देत प्रकाशने विचारले.
“मी काय बी विसरत नसते; पण तुमी दोघं काल यायचे ते विसरलात ना?” तिच्या नाकाचा शेंडा लाल झाला होता. स्वारी भलतीच रागात होती.
“विसरलो नव्हतो; येऊ न शकण्याचे कारण सांगायला आम्हाला आत तर येऊ देशील?” पावसाच्या रिपरिपीत छत्री घेऊन दारात उभे असलेल्या दोघांपैकी गौरी तिला म्हणाली.
“खुळीच हाय मी. या की आत. बोलण्यात मी विसरूनच गेले होते. माफी असावी.” तिच्या चेहऱ्यावरचा निरागसपणा नाहीसा होऊन लगेच अपराधी भाव उमटले.
“हे घे. हे तुझ्यासाठी.. म्हणजे सगळ्यांसाठीच. काकी घरात नाहीत का?” हातातील डबा रत्नाकडे सोपवत प्रकाशने विचारले.
“बाबासंग कामाला गेलीय. ह्ये काय आणलंस?”
“अगं, खरवस आहे. मस्त लागतं. काल आमच्या गायीला वासरू झालं ना, त्याचं हे चिकदूध आहे. काल शाळेतून आल्यावर आम्ही तिच्याच मागे होतो म्हणून यायला जमलं नाही; पण आज आलो बरं आणि आईला मागून खरवस सुद्धा आणलाय.” गौरीने कालची हकीकत सांगून न येण्याचे कारण स्पष्ट केले.
“आताही तुला वाटतं का की आम्ही मुद्दाम आलो नाही?” प्रकाश.
“नाही, चुकलंच माझं.”
“यापुढे असा विचार कधीच करू नकोस. आपली मैत्री साधी नाही तर अगदी पक्की आहे.” प्रकाशचे शब्द तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर एक वेगळीच चमक घेऊन येत होते.
“रत्ना तू एवढ्याश्या घरात राहतेस? ही खोली तर आमच्या खोलीपेक्षाही किती लहान आहे. तुम्ही इतके सगळे इथे कसे मावता?” गौरीने सगळीकडे एक नजर फिरवून विचारले. तिला खूप आश्चर्य वाटत होते.
छोटीशी झोपडी, तिथेच बाजूला झोपण्यासाठी असलेल्या सतरंजीची वळकटी, स्वयंपाकाची दोनचार भांडी, काही ताटल्या, चमचे आणि पेले. बाजूला एक ट्रॅंक त्यात त्यांचे दोनचार कपडे.
हिरवे पाटलाची नात आणि सरपंचाची पोर म्हणून वर्गातील मैत्रिणी तिच्याशी जरा बिचकून राहत. त्यामुळे यापूर्वी कधी कुणाच्या घरी जाण्याची संधी तिला लाभली नव्हती आणि लाभली असती तरी त्यांची परिस्थिती रत्नापेक्षा जरा बरी असल्याने असे चित्र दिसले नसते.
डोक्यावर छप्पर असलं ना तर यापेक्षा कमी जागेत पण आम्ही राहू शकतो.” गौरीच्या चेहऱ्यावरचे आश्चर्य बघून रत्ना म्हणाली.
“पण मी जेव्हा मोठी होईन ना तेव्हा खूप पैसे मिळवेन आणि छान पक्कं घर बांधेन. तिथं मग बाबा, आय, शऱ्या मी आन् मनू आनंदानं राहणार.” तिच्या डोळ्यात एक वेगळेच स्वप्न होते.
“पैसे कमवायला तू आधी शाळेत जायला हवं ना? शिकणार नाहीस तर पैसा कुठून येणार?”
प्रकाशच्या विचारण्यावर ती बारीक डोळे करून त्याच्याकडे पाहत होती. शिक्षण आणि पैसा याचे समीकरण त्या इवल्या जीवाला कळले नव्हते. कळले होते ते एकच.. शिक्षण म्हणजे श्रीमंत माणसांचे चोचले. तिच्यासारख्या गरिबांना त्याची काही गरज नाही.
“अशी खुळ्यासारखी काय बघतेस? शाळेत नाव टाकणार आहेस ना?” गौरीच्या प्रश्नावर उत्तर म्हणून रत्नाने नकारार्थी मान हलवली.
“गौरी, तिला नसेल शिकायचं तर नको शिकू दे. तू कशाला उगाच आग्रह करतेस? तिला थोडीच माहितीये की चांगलं शिकलं तर मोठं होऊन ती डॉक्टर होऊ शकते, शिक्षिका होऊ शकते आणखी वेगळं काही बनून पैसा कमवू शकते आणि तिच्या स्वप्नाचे घर देखील बांधू शकते. पण आमचं ऐकायला कोण तयार आहे?”तो मुद्दाम रत्नाची प्रतिक्रिया ऐकणासाठी म्हणाला.
“ऑ! शिकलं तर एवढं काही घडतं?” तिने गालावर हात ठेवत मोठ्या झालेल्या डोळ्यांनी विचारले.
“पण बाबा म्हणला होता की शाळेत जायचं म्हटलं तर पैसे लागतात आणि आम्ही तर..” सुरुवातीला वाटलेले आश्चर्याचे भाव बदलून तिने लहानश्या चेहऱ्याने त्याच्याकडे पाहिले.
“हो, उच्च शिक्षण घ्यायला पैसे लागतातच. किंवा आताही मोठ्या शाळेत, कॉन्व्हेंट साठी देखील पैसे लागतात पण तू आपल्या गावातील सरकारी शाळेत शिकू शकतेस की. तिथे कुठे पैसे लागणार आहेत? फक्त त्यासाठी शिकण्याची गोडी हवी. तुला तर शिकायचं नाहीये ना? मग असू दे.” खांदे उडवत तो म्हणाला.
“नाही, मला पण शाळेत जायचंय..” ती पटकन म्हणाली.
“खरंच?” गौरीच्या चेहऱ्यावरचा आनंद काही वेगळाच होता.
“हो. मला पण डाक्तर व्हाचं हाय. डाक्तर झाली की शऱ्याला मी सुई देणार आणि त्याला चांगलं करणार. मनूलाबी गोळ्या देणार.” ती नादात पुढे होऊन गेली.
“हो, हो. शरदला तर तूच बरं करशील पण डाक्तर नाही गं, डॉक्टर असं म्हणतात. माझ्यासारखं म्हण बरं. डॉ-क्ट-र..”
“डॉ-क्ट-र. डॉ-क्ट-र..” ती जिभेला वळवत मोठ्या प्रयत्नाने म्हणाली.
“अरे वा! जमलंय की.” गौरीने टाळ्या वाजवल्या.
“रत्ना, तू डॉक्टर झाल्यावर शरदला बरी करणार आहेस ते ठिक आहे; पण ही मनू कोण गं?”
“हो, मघाशी पण तू तिचं नाव घेतलं होतंस. कोण आहे ती?” गौरीच्या चेहऱ्यावर जाणून घ्यायची उत्सुकता होती.
कोण मनू? तुम्हालाही जाणून घ्यायचय ना? उत्तर पुढच्या भागात आहेच की.
